Exchange 2000 upgrade to 2003: mailbox question

Post by BlimePui » Sat, 06 Sep 2003 11:18:41

Hello all!

We are planning an Exchange 2000 Enterprise upgrade to Exchange 2003... but
we want to wipe the old server. The old server is running Windows 2000
Server with Exchange 2000 Enterprise edition on it. We have around 400
mailboxes...

MY GAMEPLAN - correct me if i'm planning this the wrong way or if you have a
better solution...
1. Set up temporary Windows 2003 Server with enough space on physical volume
to hold all Exchange 2000 mailboxes.
2. Install Exchange 2003 on temporary 2003 server.
3. Move all mailboxes from Exchange 2000 server to temporary 2003 server.
4. Wipe 2000 server and install Windows Server 2003 with Exchange 2003.
5. Move all mailboxes from temporary server to new final 2003 server.

Will this work? Thanks alot!

I don't have the extra hardware so my plan is to do the disaster recovery
scenario.  Get a good backup ... take the server down and rebuild it
2k3/2k3, then restore the MBX's and org.
Your method should work fine ... just make sure that you follow KB 307917
prior to taking down the 2k3 server.

Good luck and let me know how it goes

That's how I'd do it.  But I'd add in a bunch of stuff about public folders
and taking care of removing the first server in the site (there's a kb
article out there about this - search technet for "first server site
exchange" (no quotes) and it should appear.

1. Upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003?, tryitoz

We are running Exchange 5.5 and have about 13 servers. I believe we
are running on Windows 2000.

We have not started our upgrade/migration yet. It is anticipated it
will commence before the end of this year (2003) and be complete
perhaps late in the 4th quarter.

I think the beta for Exchange 2003 is already out.

I have 3 questions:

1. Will there be a migration path from Exchange 5.5 with OWA to
Exchange 2003 running on Windows 2000?

2. Will Exchange 2000 run on Windows 2000 as opposed to having to run
it on an XP or .NET server?

3. What are the advantages/features of Exchange 2003 over 2000? Any
papers on this or table of comparisons? Would it be more prudent to
migrate from 5.5 to 2003?

4. Should we upgrade to 2000 this year or wait perhaps a few months
and upgrade to Exchange 2003 instead?

We would have to sell this concept to management. I think they are
sold on going to 2000 however I am of the opinion (perhaps naive) that
once we have 2000 in by December 2003, we will have already shortened
Microsoft supports lifecycle and perhaps missed some great features
2003 may offer in addition to greater longevity.

Thanks very much
Sincerely, Peter
