Ex2k <-> Ex2k communication problem

Okay, here's the scenario...

I have two Exchange 2000 servers. They have been working fine for months. In
the last couple of weeks, the following problem has cropped up.

Everything seems fine with the first server. It was an old Exchange 5.5
server that was converted to 2k. It can send emails to all parties in our
organization and can receive emails from the Internet.

The second server is a clean installed Exchange 2k server. It is in a remote
office. Again, up until a couple weeks ago, it was working perfectly and
mail was flowing between both servers. It can receive inbound email from the
Internet. It can send outbound mail to the Internet. It can deliver all mail
locally to itself.

For whatever reason, when server #2 sends email to server #1, the queue gets
jammed. When I look at the queue properties on server #2, it shows the queue
name as "server1.domain.com (Remote delivery)" and the status as "Retry,
Remote delivery". Further status says "The connection was dropped by the
remote host."

I have enabled extensive logging on both sides. It looks as if server2
actually contacts server1 and begins some sort of Microsoft-specific
Exchange-to-Exchange SMTP dialog. For whatever reason, this seems to stall.
In particular I get a log that looks like:

server1.domain.com - OutboundConnectionCommand [04/May/2001:12:45:51 -0800]
"EHLO -?server2.domain.com SMTP" 0 4

server1.domain.com - OutboundConnectionResponse [04/May/2001:12:45:52 -0800]
"- -?354 Send binary data SMTP" 0 20

Basically, it looks like the transaction gets hung up after the XEXCH50
command from server2 to server1. I can't tell whether the problem lies with
server2 (it never sends the message??) or server1 (it never acks the message
once it receives it). I have enabled maximum logging on the
MSExchangeTransport object and it is useless. All it will tell me is
"Message deliver to the remote domain  "server1.domain.com" failed." (Event
ID 4000). The problem overall is intermittant. Sometimes a message is able
to get through, after much delay. Other times it fails completely.

Some other things that are wierd:
1. When I look at server1 using the Exchange System Manager, all the
protocols under the protocols folder have a question mark ("?") as a part of
their icon. For instance, the Deftual SMTP Virtual Server under the SMTP tab
has an icon with a little message, combined with a question mark. When I
look at server2, it just has a normal icon. Further, if I right click the
default SMTP server, the start/stop/pause commands on the pop-up menu are
totally disabled. Again, on server2, everything is enabled as you would
expect it to be. I'm wondering if the "upgrade" from Exchange 5.5 on server1
was less than successful and somehow the server has been limping along.

2. If I right click on the top level icon in System Manager, it displays the
operational mode. The mode selected is mixed mode. For whatever reason, the
"Change operation mode" part of the dialog is totally grayed out. I don't
know why. This is the same on both servers. Obviously, this appears to be
something related to upgrading the Exchange 5.5 server to Exchange 2000, but
I have no idea how I would go about getting into native mode.

Thanks for any help somebody can provide.

You have been very thorough but have you looked into these possible
conditions:

1) I have seen this condition as a result of  a DNS problem.  Is it possible
that a DNS change has been made - at either site or at the ISP?

2) Is there a firewall between the two sites?  Any changes with that?  I had
a few customers who had an smtp timeout issue on their Cisco Pix which was
fixed with a patch.

You can go native once all Exchange 5.5 remnants are gone (SRS, ADC, IMS).
Good luck,

Lori D.
