Exchange and SMTP problem

Exchange and SMTP problem

Post by Spencer Su » Tue, 07 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I am having a problem receiving email from one company using MS Exchange.
Since I am not the admin, I can't look at the server myself, but was
wondering if anyone has heard/had this problem and if there was a fix I
could forward to their admin.

I used to have 2 email addresses (work and personal).  I was able to send
and receive mail from the above company with no problems on either service.
However, they only had my personal email address in their address list.
Once I gave them my work address and they put it into their list, they could
only send email to my work address.  Even if they replied to a message from
my personal address, it would send it to the work one.

Well, I have since left that job for greener pastures and now cannot receive
mail from them.  My contact has talked to their admin and he reports
everything as looking okay.  I have setup an account on Hotmail just to get
around this, but it is combersome and I don't always remember to check it.

Any ideas?

How about some idea of WHY the mail cannot be delivered? I'm sure the
person that sends you mail has a copy of a NDR that contains the
reason for the non-delivery.

I have a similar problem.  My MS-Exchange 5.5 server consistently refuses
to accept mail from a couple domains.

A postmaster from one of the foreign domains suggested that there is a bug
in Exchange which causes it to improperly reject valid addresses with the
"ORCPT" keyword.  Basically he suspected this bug prevents Exchange from
communicating ESMTP correctly.

I know Exchange 5.0 had an ESMTP bug but am not sure about 5.5.

Can he provide an example of the suspect behavior? The ORCPT should be
followed by an e-mail address that is the same as the RCPT To address.
Here's a quote from section 5.2 of RFC1891:

"When initially submitting a message via SMTP, if the ORCPT parameter
is used, it MUST contain the same address as the RCPT TO address
(unlike the RCPT TO address, the ORCPT parameter will be encoded as
xtext)."

1. exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000 SMTP problem

Hello,

I have a running exchange 5.5. server with internet connector.
I have installed a joined exchange 2000 server with external SMTP
configured. When I move a mailbox from 5.5. to 2000 it is possible to send
mail internal to and from the moved mailbox

When I'm sending mail to somebody external the mail is delivered but when I
try to reply the receipient is unknown. My 5.5 server is the receiving
server and can't find the moved email address.

Is there a way to solve this problem  ?
