Win95--->NT WS 3.51-->NT 4.0???

Win95--->NT WS 3.51-->NT 4.0???

Post by Greg Mik » Fri, 15 Dec 1995 04:00:00

I've been thinking about upgrading from Win95 to an NT product, but I'm trying
to decide to wait for Workstation 4.0 to come out or get 3.51 now.

I found this on the Microsoft web site:

 Window NT 3.1, Windows NT Workstation 3.5 and Windows NT Workstation 3.51 are
eligible for Windows NT Workstation Maintenance. Purchasing Windows NT
Workstation Maintenance will enable the use of version 3.51 today and the
automatic upgrade to future Windows NT Workstation releases which occur within
the two year Maintenance agreement period.

Does anyone know the details of this. Specifically:

1) How much does it cost?
2) Does it mean that if I buy Workstation 3.51 now and subscribe to this plan,
will I get 4.0 for free?
3) Is it worthwhile??

Thanks in advance. Email replies preferred.

Me too please. I am very interested in this.

I also heard that they are looking at making NT work in 8Mb Ram
( Workstation version). Is this true.....?
Ciao for now

That would be very unlikely. The reason NT requires so much RAM is
that it is a TRUE 32 bit operating system. The code written for the OS
and the apps is a lot bigger. Just look at NeXTSTEP you can't get that
off the ground without 12MB and that is in greyscale. Your best bet is
too go and buy about 24 more MB of RAM and get the preformance.

I don't know anything about NeXTSTEP, but I've been using NT since
the March beta of 3.1... Anyway, a friend of mine with a 486DX and
8 Mb of memory ran 3.1 and 3.5. A lot of swapping I imagine, but atleast
it worked. 3.5 (and IMO 3.51) put less demand on memory than 3.1, so I
see no problems in reducing memory demand for 4.0.

My machine is also a 486DX33, but carrying somewhat more RAM - 16Mb,
which is enough for my needs, Netscape, Delphi and various winsock apps.
(Once I move I'll probably upgrade to a Pentium)

1. INTERNET<->NT 4.0<->Win95 is not equal to INTERNET<->Win95

I have a Windows NT 4.0 Server connected by modem (PPP) to Internet.
The Internet Service Provider dinamically assigns an IP number for my
computer.

Recently I have connected a LAN to my server. The server gives, via DHCP,
the IP numbers to all the Windows 95 computers in this net.

Evidently my final purpose is to access Internet from the Windows 95
computers via the NT 4.0 Server.

And here are the problems. I have been trying many of the 'Tips' given
in FAQs and magazines but I never get a single IP packet pass from the
Ethernet card to the modem. So my pings with numerical address give a
message like: Host unreachable.

- Can someone tell me exactly and precisely (a lack of many magazines) how
should I configure the NT server to allow the Windows 95 access to Internet?
- Where are the appropriate documents?
- Should I use a Wingate-like program?
- Is there any way to avoid a gateway package?

Please e-mail me your comments and advices. And if you find them interesting
for the newsgroup please post them also.

PD:     The Windows NT 4.0 Server has been 'ugraded' with Service Pack 2
