Dumb question of the day(we're all entitled to one!). Can NT workstation be
upgraded to NT Server? I think that a whole wipe\reload needs to happen, but
I was curious if anyone has tried it.

Yes, I have do that. I had to install the nt-server cd-rom over a
computer running nt-workstation. No problem. All right.

Hmm, I assume you mean the "legal" method of loading up the NTS CD and
running winnt32 /b under Workstation. To be honest, I'm not sure, but
it might work.
... With a good tagline file, who needs messages?

You can install NTServer over the Workstation installation, but it will
require that you still go through the same process as starting fromscratch.
I dont believe anything will carry forward, and you will loose any local
accounts when the server is installed. for ease of convenience, it may just
be easier to FDISK your drive and load NTS from the CD using the 3 boot
floppies. If you dont have the 3 boot floppies, shell out to a command
prompt and cd to the i386 dir for the server files, and enter winnt /OX.
this will create the boot floppies with CD support for your system.
Provided you CD doesnt run off a soundcard or something equally rediculous.
Hope this helps,
Todd

1. NT Server 4.0 and laptop NT workstation 4.0 not talking...
Here is the situation:
Windows NT server 4.0 configured as the PDC running on a desktop.
Windows NT 4.0 workstation on a lap top connected by 10base2 coax to
server via linksys pc combocard. I cannot ping from one machine to
another, I get a time out. I cannot see the other machine in each
machines network neighborhood. Both adapter cards are installed with no
resource conflicts. I have spoken with CTX (laptop manufacturer),
Linksys (pc card company) and tech support at either company cannot
solve the problem. Socket services in NT workstation laptop recognized
the PCMCIA card correctly with no errors generated in event viewer. CTX
says no problem with laptop hardware as socket services are identifying
card correctly. CTX has confirmed that CTX 700 series laptop is fully NT
compatible. Linksys has confirmed that the PCMCIA chip set in the CTX
laptop is compatible with the lan adapter (Intel compatible PCIC). I run
a dualboot system with Windows 95 OSR2 on both machines and I am not
able to ping machines when Windows 95 is booted either. Also, network
neighborhood does not "see" the other machine. If anyone has any ideas I
would greatly appreciate it and I will post the resolution to this
problem for anyone else out there in a similar situation.
thanks in advance,
Alan A.
