Win 95: Where is the modem Initialization String Stored?

Post by Anil » Thu, 27 Jul 1995 04:00:00

Greetings,

Does anyone know where the modem initialization string in Win 95 is
stored?  Or even what command is issued to the modem when it is first
made alive?

My Computer -
Control Panel -
Modems -
Properties -
Connection tab -
Advanced button -
The Extra Settings (AT is assumed here)
What is inserted depends on if your modem is in the Win 95
database...typical entry for a Rockwell chip based 28.8 v.34 will be "Z
%C0".  This merely resets the Modem to the defaults in the 0 Profile and
disables hardware compression.

Note that just about any Terminal or Fax program you open will reinitialize
the modem and override these settings.

From Microsoft:

u#: 22632 S11/Comm/Telephony
    30-May-95  16:27:00
Sb: #22303-Modem init strings
Fm: Rob Garden MS-PSS 74441,51

Hi Sven,

If you would like to change the init string you can do this by entering
the
registry.

***Microsoft cannot be help responsible for users entering into the
registry,
nor guarantee the success of doing so***

Now that that was said, we can move on :)

Follow these stes to find the modem init string:

*Start/Run/Regedit
*HK_Local_Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Class/Modem ...
*at this point you will need to choose which com port your modem is on
(0000=com1, 0001=com2, and so on..)
*then go into the "Init" key and you will see the init string listed.

If you remove the modem at any time from Control Panel/Modems you MUST
redo the above steps to change the init string back to where you had it.

Hope this helps!

Goto control panel, system, device manager, modem (choose your modem),
properties, advanced, and add the line AT &F in the Extra Settings
spot and then set your modem at the highest speed then check out how
fast your modem runs.  It will fly!!!!!

I dunno if things have changed in later builds, but in 347 the above
is not the whole story. The "extra settings" commands are issued AFTER
Win95 has issued its own set of commands which are determined at the
time of hardware installation and hidden away in the registry. One
good tip for figuring out what the heck is happening with the modem is
to check the "record log" box in the same dialogue described above
then check the resulting text file (called something like
"modemlog.txt and in the Windows directory) to see what happened.

Thats how I got mine going, anyway. Best tip is to try deinstalling
the present modem and reinstall letting Win95 make ALL the decisions,
even if they seem wrong. That's also how I fixed my problem in the
end!

Cheers.

Go into the Registry Editor, open the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem folder.

Your Init, Hangup, Reset and so on strings are stored there. Only Win95 Apps
(Hyperterminal, Dial Up Networking) will use these settings.

When I ran a session with the create log file enabled, I looked in the
logfile to find the name of an inf file mentioned. When I looked in
the inf file (mine was called MDMZOOM.INF I think) there was the
initialization string.
