I would really appreciate the assistance. This problem has been bugging
me for a while now and nothing I do seems to work.
I will attach my latest revelations below. Thanks in advance!

=====================
Here some more things I have found. I found a Microsoft Fax 'printer?'
and a Generic Printer (which I was using to 'print to files') in my
printers folder in addition to my HP Deskjet 870Cxi. I deleted all but
my HP printer. I also deleted a WIN.INI line 'File='. I then rebooted
and attempted to access to the modem on com 2. I got the same errors as
always. Ideas?
Questions:
1) What does the x behind all com ports in the WIN.INI, except com 2
mean?
2) How does one know where the HP is connected when looking at these
files?
3) And why do I have a com5, especially since my mouse is com 1, my TA
is com2 and my internal modem is com3. I don't have anything using a
com 4 or com 5.
Here are some excerps from two system files...
From WIN.INI:
[Ports]
LPT1:=
LPT2:=
LPT3:=
COM1:=9600,n,8,1,x
COM3:=9600,n,8,1,x
COM4:=9600,n,8,1,x
COM5:=9600,n,8,1,x
COM2:=9600,n,8,1,
FAX:=
PUB:=
From SYSTEM.INI:
[boot]
system.drv=system.drv
drivers=mmsystem.dll
user.exe=user.exe
gdi.exe=gdi.exe
sound.drv=mmsound.drv
dibeng.drv=dibeng.dll
comm.drv=comm.drv
shell=Explorer.exe
keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv
fonts.fon=vgasys.fon
fixedfon.fon=vgafix.fon
oemfonts.fon=vgaoem.fon
386Grabber=vgafull.3gr
display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv
mouse.drv=mouse.drv
*DisplayFallback=0
I am hoping that we have this problem on the run! ;)
