Uninstalling NT 4.0 WS on an dual boot NT/Win95

Post by Matty Parano » Mon, 08 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I would like to uninstall NT 4.0 WS on my dual boot NT/Win95 P233.
I recall seeing a procedure for this in a magazine, which I of course
didn't save.

I think it involved 3 files on the root of the boot drive and then
just deleting from Win95.  Can anyone tell me a safe way to accomplish
this?

Thanks,

Matt DiTarando

Run the W95 SYS command on your c: drive to disable NT and delete the WINNT
folder . Then delete NTLDR , BOOT.INI , BOOTSECT.DOS and NTDETECT.COM. from
the root of c:

Assuming (!) that it is all on a FAT partition then you use the W95 SYS
command on the c: drive by booting from the Floppy drive with a W95 boot
floppy. Then delete the WINNT folder and on the C: drive , NTLDR , BOOT.INI
, BOOTSECT.DOS and NTDETECT.COM.

If its on an NTFS partition then use the NT setup  boot disks , delete the
NT partition when it reaches that point and exit setup. You can also use
delpart.exe which can be downloaded from Microsoft.com

1. Can Someone Email me advice on NT 4.0 WS dual booting with Win95

I am running the configuration that you require with no trouble. I
personally think its best to keep win95 on one drive and nt on another.
Especially with large drives you loose so much with wasted space under
the fat scheme. If you make nt on its own volume then you can make in an
ntfs drive and this allows individual file or directory compression plus
each cluster is now only 512 bytes instead of 8 or 16 k with large
drives.

The dual boot is not a problem. You have to boot up dos on your drive c.
configure dos so that it can see your cd rom. now you can always load or
reload nt or win95. Nt will take a copy of itself and expand it into a
temp dir typically on the first available drive with enough space say 50
mb. Then it will want a reboot and it will then load itself from the
expanded temporary files. At this time it has already created the dual
boot configuration. you can boot either dos or nt standard or nt in
640x480vga mode (usefull if you move your machine temporally to a 14"
monitor from a 17".) You change the default boot os and delay time from
within nt control panel -system. or you can edit the BOOT.INI file in
c:\. change its attributes first from RSA.

If you have the space then I find it preferable to create a dir on the
drive to hold a copy of the cd roms i386 dir. It save searching for the
rom later. I do the same with win95.
