Hello.
I have been using Internet a lot lately, starting many large apps at the
same time. A few times Windows responded with a message (pls excuse my
English):
"It might (sic!) be necessary to increase the MinSPs value in the SYSTEM.INI
file to avoid the likelihood of the stack error. Right now there are 5 stack
pages (SP) loaded. Press any key to continue"
- then Windows sometimes continues to work, and sometimes crashes.
What the hell do I do? I opened SYSTEM.INI file, I don't see MinSPs or SP
values anywhere there... If someone knows what's up and can help (pls!) I'd
send over a txt copy of the SYSTEM.INI file, it's not a large one.
It's not a very big problem - but VERRRRY annoying.

1. MS TCP/IP stack : initial values of retransmission timers

I have to connect NT 4 workstations to a wide area radio network.
These workstations run TCP based applications. An NDIS 3 driver has
been developped to interface radio transceivers with MS TCP/IP stack.
Everything works fine except from the performance point of view at
connection establishment and for the transmission of the first four of
five data packets. Indeed the radio links of this radio network are
rather slow. This implies a large delay of transmission which is not
compatible with initial values (3 s) of retransmission timers of
Microsoft's stack, leading to several unuseful retransmissions of
packets until TCP has adapted the retransmission timer to the actual
network capabilities (thanks to exponential backoff).

I have searched through Microsoft's documentation entries in the
registry which would allow to set the initial values of retransmission
timers (for connection and for packet transmission) to a higher value.
I didn't find anything. So my questions are :

- does anybody know of undocumented registry entries for NT4 to set
initial values of retransmission timers ?
- does anybody know how to patch these values which are probably in
the file Tcpip.sys (I am using version 4.0 of this file as included in
NT4 SP3) ?
- does anybody know of an alternate TCP/IP stack running under NT4,
offering an NDIS 3 interface to the link layer and a Winsock interface
to the application layer,and finally allowing to set the parameters
that interest me ?

If nobody can answer to these previous (I guess hard because unusual)
questions, then any suggestion to address them to Microsoft is
welcomed. I confess that, as a casual Windows developper, I am lost in
their labyrinth of web pages.
