Apple defector needs hardware advice

I am a recent refugee from the wreckage that is Apple. I am considering
buying an NEC Direction SPL333. Does anyone know anything -- good or bad
-- about either this particular machine, or NECs generally. Please email
responses as well as posting, to be sure I see any replies. Thanks for any
help anyone can offer.

I am suspicious of NEC. Packard Bell and NEC merged recently, and I
suspect that NEC computers are Packard Bell's in disguise. Packard
Bell *does not* have a great reputation. They have had ongoing
technical support problems (you can't get through to them) and
hardware defects\problems. I would not buy one.

NEC's monitors on the other hand, are excellent.

If you are new to PC's, I would recommend buying a computer from a
manufacturer that comes with 24 hour, 7 days a week FREE 800 number
technical support. You are likely to have many questions how to do
things on the PC that you used to be able to do on the Mac.

Compaq and HP have some nice looking systems out there right now, but
I have heard nothing but complaints about their technical support and
upgradability.

IBM's have always been good, but they have always cost about $200 more
than a comparable model from someone else, and I am also leery about
their quality now since they have struck a deal with AST to
manufacture most of their systems.

I would highly recommend looking at a Dell or a Gateway system. These
are two direct marketers of PC's, you cannot buy them in stores, you
buy them direct. They both offer the kind of tech support I described
and also come with a Monitor (usually 17") for about the same price of
store bought systems *without* a monitor. I have had good experiences
with both. Dell systems have gotten slightly higher marks in the
ratings from PC and Windows Magazines for several years running now.
They are always the fastest. You can check them both out on-line..

They both have newsgroups too...

Micron is another direct marketer that deserves mention...

Apple defector needs hardware advice

Go back to Apple as fast as you can. If you want to know why just look at the
multitude of problems that MS Win95 has caused. You can search for years and
still not find answers to  some of the basic problems win95 causes.

1. Need advice on video in/out hardware

Oh knowledged and wise netters,

a friend of mine works in an university departement where they plan to
use computers in their video productions. She asked me what kind of
computer she could buy and what kind of additional hardware she would
need.

Their requirements are quite high. They want to get full-speed, full-size
PAL Video (768x576) in professional quality (betacam) into the computer,
add animation and put it back to tape. Possible solutions are as well
digitizing (which would cost a hell lot for disk space alone...) or just
adding the animation to the video using some video-thru hardware that
take the video signal in and puts a combined signal out. Even a solution
that only gets a betacam-quality signal out of a machine would be
accepted. They then could mount it into the movie using their normal
equipment.

Their preferred type of machine would be a macintosh, since this platform
seems to combine ease of use, professionality and quality best. Also some
of the members of the departement already used a macintosh.

Is there a solution for macintoshs that satisfy their needs?

Please answer per email.

Thanx in advance,

Peter
