Norton will not scan Memory, Scandisk does not work,Restart does not work

Post by gorenstei » Thu, 01 Nov 2001 01:40:52

I am having a series of problems.  My perfectly stable system starting
acting up last Thursday after it hung after shutdown.  I now cannot do a
full Norton scan -it freezes at Memory scan.  I cannot run scandisk-it
freezes without starting and while I can shutdown cleanly, I cannot shutdown
w/restart.  All my programs work fine.
Are these all related somehow?  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
David

If you do not find a simple answer you can do reinstall over itself.  You should lose
no files or settings this way, but any corrupted files will be replaced.  Remember to
go to the Windows Update Site afterwards to redo any Updates gone due to the
reversion to older files.

This installation is on a Toshiba Laptop-I believe the only way to reinstall
is to reformatt and reinstall,as I do not have a full windows disk.  Is
there a work around?

Unfortunately no, and that is why I will not buy any system that does not allow me to
get to the CAB files.  Look at your Restore disk and see if there is a Win9x folder
or something similar with a bunch of CAB files along with other files.  If there is
you may be able to do a repair install by installing over itself.  Otherwise if it is
an image style Recovery Disk and no CAB files are discernable you can only format and
reinstall.

1. Memory requirements for DOS programs working in Windows95 MS DOS Windows

I am building a database in a DOS Window (I prefer the DOS Version to
the Windows' one), I expect that it will ultimately be quite large, say,
10MB. Do I need to make any special settings to the DOS environment
variables to be sure that I have no trouble running this Ap. If so what
adjustments need I make?

Appreciate comments

Regards,

Viviane
