Error unmounting removable drive F: - Iomega SCSI Zip/NT 4.0

Post by T. Sea » Wed, 05 Mar 1997 04:00:00

When I try to eject the zip disk using the eject command that comes up
after you right click the drive icon in My Computer, I get this error.
The error "Error unmounting removable drive F:" appears for all
accounts except the administrator when an attempt to eject the disk is
made.  I can however eject if I push the button on the drive, but read
in the NT resource Kit that this is not a good idea.  I've tried with
both NTFS formatted and FAT formatted zip disks.  The error still
appears as above.  The only exception is that with the FAT disk, I can
use the eject button on the drive and with the NTFS not even the button
on the drive works.  If anyone has any suggestions about how to fix
this I'd appreciate all help.  Please E-mail and post replies.  I've
tried MS knowledge base and Iomegas web site.  Tried granting
permissions to Iomega Corporation registry keys, etc...nothing works so
far.  I know there is a web site out there that you can go to and more
or less pay to get questions answered.  I'm trying to avoid calling and
paying for tech support, just looking for someone else that may have
had this problem and fixed it.  Thanks,

If you are using NTFS the disk is cashed and the new contends
are only written in complete if you use software-eject. with
FAT formatting the contents are updated after the drive activity
lamp is dark for a while ( to be sure use software eject also).

If you have any program open that has any connection to this drive
it can't be ejected. as a result you may have to close ALL programs
and then use software eject! I have such problems with a MO too.
sometimes i have software with which i opend files on the MO and
after even closing ALL files the disk could not be ejected and
only closing this programs helps.

Error unmounting removable drive F: - Iomega SCSI Zip/NT 4.0

I have observed the exact same problem on three NT 4.0 systems, one of them
has an internal SCSI MO drive and a external SCSI Zip drive and the other two
are new Dell systems with internal SCSI Zip drives.  The problem occurs with
ALL removable drives, i.e., Zip AND MO, but not floppy drives.  I have also
observed that users other than the administrator are unable to format MO or
Zip disks.  In this case, no error message was produced.  So far, no solution
has been found.

Error unmounting removable drive F: - Iomega SCSI Zip/NT 4.0

Thanks for the input Feng.  If you find out ANYTHING, please let me
know.  I have the resource kit, so I can't help but think the answer is
in there somewhere or in a readme file.  I just haven't found it yet.
If I were a betting man, I'd place my bet on incorrect permissions
somewhere in the registry, but since I haven't learned the registry
insideout and backwards, I haven't found a problem there yet either.

I have just acquired a zip drive an had the same problem with disk ejection.
What I discovered was that if the disk contents are visible in Explorer and
an attempt is made to software eject, the error message appears.  If the
contents of another drive appear in Explorer and the zip icon is *only right
clicked* then the softwre eject works!

Trying to access the zip tools as a user other than Administrator failed,
with an error reporting that no drives were detected.  Does anyone have a
solution to this one?

Have a look at www.bhs.com, there is a small utility to unmount
removable drives. I just downloaded it but didn't try it yet. Hope it
can help you.

Greetings,

I'm experiencing the same problem with my parallel ZIP drive, and it's
driving me crazy.  If I grant administrator-level priveledges to
a user account, that user is able to eject the disks just fine.  But
other than that, I have to use the button on the drive.

Also, I am unable to run the ZIP tools software unless I am logged
in as the administrator.  An error message is displayed stating that
there are no ZIP drives connected the the system.

All users are able to read/write to/from the ZIP disk just fine.

Have you found a solution to the problem?  Please pass it along if
you solve this.

Error unmounting removable drive F: - Iomega SCSI Zip/NT 4.0

Post by Ben Dove » Sat, 15 Mar 1997 04:00:00

I found the following info in
http://www.iomega.com/support/techs/zip/2059.html
under "Known Problems":

12.Iomega Tools for Windows NT can only be used by those logged in as an
administrator. Person logged into Windows NT as users will receive a
message that there are no drives supported by Iomega Tools.

Although the document applies to Windows NT 3.5 and Iomega NT Tools 1.2,
it seems that the problem still exists with Windows NT 4.0 and Iomega NT
tools 1.41.

Would it help to move the program group out of the profile area for
administrator and into the 'all users' profile area?  Just a thought.

BTW, I'm experiencing something similar - sometimes when I change disks and
then look at the contents in either a command prompt window or through
explorer, the window will hang without ever completing the task.  Can't shut it
off with task manager and I can't shut down - it  just progressively hangs more
and more processes until the whole thing locks.  The only way I can recover is
to power down and reboot - which is not easy on anything - least of all my
nerves on the new reboot.  This one's driving me nuts too.

Error unmounting removable drive F: - Iomega SCSI Zip/NT 4.0

As everyone seems to be discovering, you have to have Administrator
privileges to eject (unmount) NTFS media. I posted questions on
exactly which Administrator privileges do the trick so I could give
just these to Users who need to eject MO media to back up their data,
but no-one in any of these groups has replied. I wrote to the authors
of two Unmount utilities and the one who replied did not know
(although he was very helpful otherwise).
The only answer (and it is risky) is to reformat the media as FAT and
you can then eject at will from the front panel. The downside is the
loss of security and the greater robustness of NTFS. You also risk
loss of data if someone just ejects a disk that someone else is
writing to at the time.
There really seems to be no wholly satisfactory answer at present.

1. using Umax UDS-IS11 SCSI Interface Card with Iomega SCSI Zip drive?

 Hi anyone!!!

I have just purchased an external SCSI Zip drive to be used with Windows
NT 4.0 Workstation and I was hoping to piggy back it off my Umax SCSI
scanner card but have been unable to load or find an appropriate driver.
If you know where I can get one... If it is...or is not... possible or have
any suggestions I would appreciate it very much...  Hoping i won't have to
incurr other expenses... thanks...
