A couple of Windows XP Issues

A couple of Windows XP Issues

Post by Geoffrey Aldric » Sun, 04 Aug 2002 01:32:16

Hello Group,
I recently bought a new system that came pre-loaded with Windows XP Home
Edition.  This is my first time posting to a Microsoft Windows XP group, and
I'm not too sure how appropriate this message is for the group, but I'm
hoping that someone will be able to help me.

I am trying to use Norton Speed Disk (from Norton SystemWorks 2002) to
optimize/defrag my hard drive (which is NTFS, BTW) and it says that it will
check the drive for errors first, and after it runs it tells me that it
found errors and to run CHKDSK /f.  When I run that, it asks me to schedule
the repair to the next restart because the drive is locked.  So I 'OK' it,
and when I restart CHKDSK runs through its tests.  When it finishes the
tests it reboots the computer again.  Then I try to run Norton Speed Disk
again, and it says that I still have errors.  How come CHKDSK /f didn't fix
the errors during the boot-scan?  How do I fix them?

My second little issue, isn't really a Windows XP issue but I was hoping
that someone might be able to help me out.  I installed Microsoft Money 98
on my system side-by-side with Microsoft Money 2002 which was pre-installed.
Decided I didn't like the cluttered interface and the constant nagging to
use Passport to send my financial data to wherever Microsoft wanted it to
go.  Anywho, whenever I boot the system the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money
folder opens on the desktop.  It does that on my sister's computer on
Windows ME.  She has Microsoft Money 2000 on her system and I installed
Money 98 on it while I had some serious downtime with my old computer.  My
questions are, how come this folder is opening every time I boot, and how do
I stop it?  BTW, I've already looked in the Startup folder.  There is no
shortcut to that folder (or any other folder) in there.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Sincerely,
Geoffrey Aldrich

That is a known issue with Norton.  If Speed Disk encounters an error, it will
tell you to run Disk Doctor.  Disk Doctor then tells you that you have errors
and it can't fix them until reboot.

Uncheck the fix errors on the screen for Norton Disk Doctor.  This is the only
work around for now until Symantec fixes it.

HTH,
Dave

Get rid of Norton.  Norton has been a problem since DOS 5.

Hello Group,

Edition.  This is my first time posting to a Microsoft Windows XP group, and
I'm not too sure how appropriate this message is for the group, but I'm
hoping that someone will be able to help me.

check the drive for errors first, and after it runs it tells me that it
found errors and to run CHKDSK /f.  When I run that, it asks me to schedule

and when I restart CHKDSK runs through its tests.  When it finishes the
tests it reboots the computer again.  Then I try to run Norton Speed Disk
again, and it says that I still have errors.  How come CHKDSK /f didn't fix
the errors during the boot-scan?  How do I fix them?
