USB Harddisk on Belkin USB 2.0 PCMCIA Card

Hi,

I will test a Belkin-USB 2 PCMCIA Card (with external
Power Adaptor) for a friend who has only USB 1.1 Slots on
his Notebook.

Many devices like the USB Bus powered CanoScan LiDE 20
works fine at the Belkin.
My Notebook is a Gericom Supersonic Force 2,5 GHz.
I had Windows XP SP1 with no additional fixes.

I had only a problem with a Fujitsu MHS2040AT USB
Harddisk.

When I attach the Drive to the Belkin (external powered!)
there is after the initial beep and the "New Hardware
found FUJITSU MHS2040AT USB Device" message an Hardware
installation error (The LED on the Harddisk lights red
most of the time).

When I attach the same USB Harddisk on an native USB 2.0
port on the same notebook the Disk works fine.

Who can help me.

I guess it maybe a "power" issue.  You seem to have demonstrated that the
card does function in the slot re CanoScan works.  You seem to have
established the HDD works by running it directly connected to a USB port.

I assume you are running the drive powered through the Belkin Card (I have
the same card connected to a IBM Travelstar HDD).  On my enclosure (dual USB
and Firewire), I can power the drive by supplying power directly to the
enclosure, can you do that and have you tried that?

My drive works OK by powering it through the power connection to the card
but will not run without the power supply connected (to the card).  On the
other hand my mouse does not need the power connected to the card for it to
work.  The mouse does not require the same amount of power as the drive.

1. Belkin USB 2.0 PCI Card on a Soyo Dragon Plus MoBo with onboard USB 1.1

I have a Soyo Dragon Mobo with an AMB Athlon 1800+ chip.
The Mobo is fabulous but has aging USB 1.1 technology
built in.

I recently added a Belkin 5 port (4 external 1 internal)
PCI card to it.  All seemed to work fine but then we
started getting some hard system hangs.  Most of these
occur during intense graphical, online games (like counter-
strike) but have also occured during general internet
sufing.

I have burned a few DVDs during this time and there have
been no hangs then.

I went into the BIOS and disabled the 1.1 support in hopes
that it was a condfict, but it still continued to do it.

Latest drivers are installed for PCI card, MoBo and XP Sp1.

I have now removed the 2.0 card and no freezes yet.

Any suggestions or familiar problems encountered would be
incouraging.

Thanks in advance.

Stephen
