Windows XP anomaly

Windows XP anomaly

My system runs great until I go to play Descent3, Thief,
or working in Dromed. The system hangs, and hangs hard. I
have to do a cold boot. Any suggestions? Windows XP isn't
finding any hardware/software problems, or any other
problems. All drivers are acceptable to XP. Help!

Thanks! Oh... is there a piece of software that I can DL
and run all day and all night, to rule out anything of a
general, non-* nature. If it would run around the
clock on that, but crash on the games, that would help
narrow it down.

Windows XP anomaly

You can try running Dr. Watson in the background to trap error messages.
See Help and Support for information on how to put the good doctor on the
job.  Have you checked the game sites for possible updates?  Also, you may
want to check for the current drivers for your ATI graphics and the Creative
sound cards.  The in-box Windows XP drivers are only minimal in nature, and
don't necessarily give you the best.  On the SB Live Value, try reducing the
hardware acceleration a couple notches and see if that does any good.

1. XP anomalies ... and several questions.

System:  Tyan m/b, P4, 512 PC133, 30 G dual boot Win98/WinXP, 80 G
data drive.

I elected to keep 98 for certain legacy programs, and installed XP for
graphic & audio recording and editing.  XP installed a year ago, and
restore was enabled for the XP drive only.  All of the suggested
updates from Microsoft have been installed along the way.

Fast forward to 1 mo ago.  Noticed sluggish performance, and saw more
processes going (21 at boot up) than before.  I decided to restore,
but found that restore was disabled, and thus no restore points
available.  I'm pretty sure I didn't disable it.  I re-enabled it via
settings menu.

At some point, some other things manifested.

1)  At boot a box appears saying, "Error, Out of system resources,
Abort, Retry, Ignor."  Clicking any choice removes the box from
screen.

2)  Clicking 'Turn Off Computer', then 'Restart' does nothing.  The
only way to reboot short of a hard reboot is to click 'Hibernate'.
From the hibernate state do a hard reset.  After restored, 'Restart'
works.

3)  I tried to do a restore to either of the two oldest points (the
oldest about one month old) fails.  After going through the gyrations,
it announces, "cannot restore to the date selected" .

I recently removed a backdoor (BackDoor.Dsnx, the files PPPNDI.EXE,
AVFIL32.EXE, LAST.EXE), found by AVG.  I haven't checked the registry
for changes, though.

I'm not sure if the virus occurance coincided with the other problems.
I have 3 questions:

1)  Any thoughts regarding the above noted anomalies?

2)  I'm considering moving 98 & XP to a new larger drive, and using
Partition Magic 7.0's boot manager to select between the two.  Not
sure how to install XP (after 98), so that it can be booted with
Partition Magic rather than Microsoft's boot manager.

3)  If I reinstall as above, can I import settings form the existing
XP, without risk of importing any damaged systems files?  What is the
procedure?

I appreciate any suggestions!
