HELP! Can't connect to other machines in the network...

Post by Marc War » Tue, 29 Apr 2003 10:58:02

I am not trying to network the computers. But, now and then, I want to
be able to get files from or to another computer in my house. We all
share a cable modem connectiona via a router. I used to be able to go
to my file manager, click on tools then "MAP NETWORK DRIVE", then pick
a drive from a drop down list (like "z") and pick a Folder, also from
a drop down list. I always chose "\\Upstairs\Kids Hard Drive", and it
worked fine. Now I just get another message that says..."The drive
could not be mapped, because no network was found."

What does that mean? What happened? Can anyone help?

Well, it sounds like you are disconnected from your workgroup.  Are you all
part of the same workgroup?  Is your computer in the same IP subnet?  Check
to see if you can browse to the computer that you need to get the file from
in Network Places.

Marc:

You can piggyback on my thread "Adding XP Pro to a Peer to Peer
Network" in this newsgroup.  The best I have been able to do is see
the non-NT machines using \\machineName\mySharedFolder in the Run
command.  I cannot get them to appear in the Network places.

I have not removed all protocols but TCP/IP in that I still need
either Netbui or IPX for a print server, but I thought in my thrashing
I had tried that.

Suffice it to say, M$ has done it again, ignoring the principle of
backward comptibility to fatten its illegally gotten coffers.

HELP! Can't connect to other machines in the network...

that's "compatibility"

1. WinXP PC can't see others and others can't access it

I've got a small 3 machine network. All PCs are brand new out of the box.

Server - Win2k Server (don't ask why. That's what they wanted) - Static
Address with NetBOIS over TCP/IP enabled
PC1 - WinXP Pro- DHCP Address with NetBOIS over TCP/IP enabled
PC2 - WinXP Pro- DHCP Address with NetBOIS over TCP/IP enabled
All plugged into an unmanaged switch.

PC1 and the server can see each other just fine.
PC2 can't see anything and nothing can access it. They can see PC2 but get
an error that it's not accessible. When trying to browse the network from
PC2 I get an error that the workgroup is not accessible.

Any thought what I've got wrong here?

Thanks,

Brad
