Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, activate.
or
Alternatively, you can open the Windows Product Activation Wizard by
clicking Start, then Run, and then typing oobe/msoobe /a".

If XP was installed in the shop

Hi,

Have you been getting balloon messages on startup telling you that you have
x days to activate? If not, then odds are that XP was activated by the
person who installed it on your computer.

If it hasn't already been activated, there should be a key icon in the
system tray with the tip "x days to activate" (or something similar).
Alternatively, go to Start->All Programs->Activate Windows, which should
tell you whether or not XP has been activated.

Failing that, go to Start->Run and run %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\oobe\msoobe.exe
/A, which will open WPA.

Hope this helps,
Ryan Smith

Thanks Ryan, looks like it may be already done. No key and no sign of an
activate anywhere else. I thought it had to be the owner who did it?

System builders can activate, or if a major OEM such as Dell or Compaq, the
OS is tied to the bios and activation isn't needed as long as the bios isn't
changed.

Just curious: what happens if you DON'T activate? What does Activate
actually DO? It's a form of registration, correct?

If your copy has not been activated by the installer, you have to activate
it or it will become useless after 30 days from installation.

If you buy a new PC with Windows XP installed on it, you WON'T have to deal with Windows Product Activation (WPA)! That's because the version of XP that ships with new PCs will be tied only to that PC's BIOS, which means that you can swap out every hardware component on the system (including the motherboard, incidentally, as long as you use one the same PC maker supplies) as often as you want, and XP will never ask you to reactivate it. And if you restore the system by using the PC maker-supplied restore CD-ROMs, activation isn't required, ever. This information affects about 90 percent of the people who will eventually use XP, so it's great news.

1. XP thinks I am installing to a network drive when I'm installing locally

I have the most irritating problem.  I went to a client's
workstation yesterday to install Adobe Acrobat.
Everything is fine until I get to the point where it
shows you the destination directory for the
installation.  Everything is correct and The client had
gigs of free space on the local hard drive.  However when
I tried to continue the installation we got an error that
said that the destination drive (\\SERVER\MENDEN) does
not have enough disk space.  We have tried everything.
We are NOT trying to install to this network drive but to
the local hard drive but it simply will not cooperate.
