Dual Boot, Windows 2000 Professional/Windows XP Professional

I am building a new machine that I would like to dual boot
between Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP
Professional.  I have one 40 GB drive that I was going to
partition off, one per OS.  I created a W2KPro install on
the first partition, and am getting ready to install XP
into the second partition.  What happens if I blow away
the W2K Pro partition and reinstall?  Will this leave my
XP Pro unbootable?

Please respond by email if possible.

Hi Carl,

Sorry, no support by e-mail.

Depends on where the boot files go. They should be installed to the root of the boot partition. If this happens to be the W2K partition, then the boot files will be overwritten or wiped if you either a) reinstall W2K or b) format that partition. Not really a big deal anyways, as you can boot the WinXP CD afterwards and run a repair from the recovery console.

If you want to do that, save ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini
after Windows XP has been installed.
After you're done reinstalling W2K, copy the saved files
back to C:\.
