Windows XP and (uninstalled) pcAnywhere Blocking issue

Post by Dirk Engelhard » Tue, 19 Feb 2002 13:38:10

I am testing my current system Win98 SE for compatibility with XP. It cames
back with pcAnywhere 10.0 being a Blocking issue. I have properly
uninstalled pcAnywhere and removed all (as far as I can tell) all files and
left-over registry entries. It still is a blocking issue. Symantec's online
tech support service says it's "closed".

Anybody can help me? Thanks

Dirk

Instead of Upgrading Win 98 you should do a clean install. A lot of people
post here that they have problems upgrading rather than doing a Full Clean
install.

Are you running Check System Compatibility (from XP CD)  or the MS Upgrade
advisor ?
The more important issue is whether your hardware has checked out.
If so, you may proceed with XP setup.
Later on, you can recheck with Symantec website on any patches & / or
updates.

Windows XP and (uninstalled) pcAnywhere Blocking issue

Thanks Maurice N, I'm checking with the MS Upgrade Advisor. I have tried to
install XP, but in no way does it let me go past the pcAnywhere Blocking
issue. The hardware checks out to my satisfaction.

I will try today again to reach Symantec's online Tech Support. They must
know what might still be left in my system from pcAnywhere that's blocking
the install. If nothing else I will have to start from scratch.

Thanks

Dirk

If you are knowledgeable in usage of registry editor, you may consider doing
a search for mention of "PCAnywhere" , or Symantec, or Norton, etc.   do be
careful.
It's even conceivable you have a leftover dll from pcanywhere, such as in a
Windows system folder.

1. "Blocking Issue: PcAnywhere 10"

I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro.   It says there is a "Blocking Issue:
PCAnywhere 10".

I have removed PCANywhere from add/remove programs (what a user-interface
tarball that is!),
then manually deleted the folder "Symantec/PCAnywhere",
removed every occurrentce of "pcanywhere", and "aw_host" from the registry,
did a find file and removed anything that looked like PCAnywhere.
And oh yes, removed it from the menus.  Did everything but dissolve the CD
in H2SO4.

After all that,  XP installer still finds "PCAnywhere 10". But of course
it's coy, and doesnt
tell us Why or Where it got that idea.

Any humans out there have any idea what is going on?

Thanks,

George
