Replacing hard drive

Replacing hard drive

I want to replace my hard drive which contains Windows XP
home edition, without having to reload all the
applications.  I copied the drive contents to a new
drive, then made the new drive the master and booted up.
No other hardware was changed. The display froze on the
first Windows screen. I assume this has something to do
with the activation. But what should I do next.

Your best bet would be to make an image of the drive
instead of copying the files.  I've done that many times
with no problems.  Somewhting like Norton Ghost or
DriveImage would work great.

I have done a similiar exercise, I can not say if this is
the best way but it worked for me.

1) Used the Microsoft backup tool to create a full backup
on my orginal drive (you will need sufficient disk space
on your old drive)
2) Installed new disk
3) Booted Windows XP CD, and did fresh install on new disk
4) Mounted old disk at F
5) Used Microsoft backup tool to restore all files from F
onto new C drive.

The MS backup tool is not installed by default. Insert
your Windows XP installation Cd, close the welcome
screen. Open Explorer and go to \valueadd\msft\ntbackup
on your CD drive. Double click Ntbackup.msi file to
install. When installed go to start menu > all programs >
accessories > system tools and you will find the backup
entry.

 Hope this helps

Thanks for the help. I did it all and it worked sort of.
Unfortunately when I restored all files, many  drivers
and some applications were missing. (I checked to
overwrite everything)
I also found XP setup has a repair option which is
supposed to help this but it wouldn't work for me even
with help of a Microsoft call. So I'm still trying to
work it something out.

Try Casper XP from Future Systems Solutions. You have to
buy it for $35, but its worth it if you value your system
and want to do it right.

1. Replacing hard drive (C) With a new drive????

I want to replace my existing 40 GB HD, a MAXToR, that
has Windows XP Pre UPGRADE installed upon it.

First I  transfered the entire existing C drive to my new
hard drive a WD 80 GB drive(using Norton Ghost), this
transfer went well. however about 1GB of files did not
transfer???? I know not what was not transferred.

The Bios recognizes the hew drive. Also when the old C
drive is used to boot from the My Computer (windows also
sees the new drive as a new D drive).

However after removing my old C drive and re pinning the
new drive as the only drive when it starts to boot and I
see the black background XP pro splash page as in a
normal boot. ( the dots are moving as is normal)
Then that page disappears and I now see a blue (NOT THE
OLD BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH) screen that says windows XP and
hax a small windows logo near the center of it.

And that is where the computer hangs up and goes no
farther.

I have tried all of the available BIOS boot options,
tried to boot from it as HD-0 and put then it on my
ATA133 card and tried to boot it as a SCUZY disk (same as
the orginal old C drive was booted from)

It still hangs up at the same point)

Can I try to reinstall windows over the transferred XP
program that is there if I boot from the old C drive and
install XP  on the drive when it is up and shown as a D
drive?? How would I do that( install XP again over on a D
drive??? I am afrais my prior registeration ACTIVATION of
the OS would not be valid if I start from scratch

What else can I do?

Can anyone help me with this problem?
