My Documents folder gone bizarro (sort of)

Hi all,

I know this sort of thing has been asked millions of times, but I
*think* mine is slightly different.

In the process of moving 'My Documents' to another drive, I backed it
up several times (forgot that I'd done it already, etc) to other
partitions.  Anyway, I did get around to moving it by copying
everything over in to the new folder, and then changing the target
using Tweak UI.  Anyway, from what I remember, one of the old backups
retained it's 'special property' in that even if you went to the
actual folder location in Explorer (as opposed to just using the
Desktop or Start Menu), and right-clicked on it, it had the special
icon and the 'move, change target, restore default, etc' pane.  which
I quite liked.  but I've since done something and that backup has gone
back to being a normal folder.  And the actual 'My Documents' folder
(when you go to the actual location in explorer) looks like a normal
folder when you right click on it, except that it can't be customised.

The thing is, the original 'My Documents' folder under 'C:\D & S\User'
was 'special' - ie all 3 ways of accessing it (Start Menu, Desktop,
thru Explorer) would retrieve the same Properties page with the same
panes.  Now only the Start Menu and Desktop do this, while the
Explorer way looks like a normal folder (but without the customize).
So the obvious question - how do I get the 'Explorer way' to be like
the others again?  Obviously not critical, but it's nagging at me.

TIA

chris.

To the best of my knowledge, the actual folder in the user profile directory doesn't have the 'special properties'.  I haven't moved or copied mine and the only the desktop & start menu show the 'move, etc.' options.  Perhaps what happened is at some point you managed to move/copy the special shortcut which exists on the desktop & start menu, rather than the actual folder.

Just my guess,
Keith

I guess that's possible...mind you, as of yesterday (before I went and
mucked with it) that backup was acting like the Desktop and Menu, and
it was definitely a separate folder (cf a shortcut) because when I
compared the contents they were different.  Strangely (or not), the
target folder for that backup one was the same as for the rest - ie it
pointed to my actual 'My Documents' folder on another partition,
rather than itself (the backup).

My Documents folder gone bizarro (sort of)

Er, I fixed it.  Found a different file from a different My Documents,
anyway...

The problem was with the desktop.ini file.  If you place this in the
desktop.ini file (hidden) in the actual 'My Documents' folder then it
behaves like the Start Menu and Desktop 'My Documents' folders.

My Documents folder gone bizarro (sort of)

Yep, that does it.  Truly interesting.  I had edited other desktop.ini files to add backround pictures to folders, but hadn't deleted anything.  Maybe it went bye-bye when I did a clean install of XP but then copied folder contents from backup.

Thanks for the info,
Keith

1. ??? My Documents Folder and Shared Documents Folder ??

Greetings,

I just discovered that I have two folders with the same documents and pictures in them. One of the folders is the My Documents Folder that I use all of the time. Then I just found another one in the Shared Documents area in My Computer.

Is this a normal occurrence? Are these folders sharing the same information to be accessed in two different ways?

Or, are these folders storing this information in two separate files and are they being duplicated?

I am curious how a computer operating system works and how these duplicate folders function.

Thanks in advance for comments and your help in understanding how my XP OS works and stores information.
