Xp and windows 2k, windows 2k uninstall major problem

Post by Mads Christianse » Sat, 10 Nov 2001 04:38:02

I had a dualboot windows XP Pro and windows 2000. then I
use partition magic 7 to remove the windows 2000 partition
and only have win XP, however when I then restart the comp
it stops starting up immediately after trying to boot from
the CDrom and 5 small boxes appear on the screen. and I
can't do anything, I try to reinstall and it does the same
after the first restart!
anyone got any solutions?

regards,
mads

sounds like maybe  you were using bootmagic and set the win2000 partition at
the active default boot partition. now that you removed the 2000
partition............ did you create bootmagic rescue diskettes? If so, you
can probably fix it easily. Otherwise, and I am not sure of this, try
booting with the Partition magic 7 CD and see if you can set the XP
partition as unhidden and active. I use PM 7 myself and think it is
absolutely fantastic. Hope this helps you get going again.

If you can get to the Recovery Console by hitting F8, or through the CD,
then:
Use the bootcfg command for boot configuration and recovery (boot.ini for
most computers).

The bootcfg command with the parameters listed below is only available when
you are using the Recovery Console. The bootcfg command with different
parameters is available from the command prompt.

Usage:

bootcfg /default

Set the default boot entry.

bootcfg /add

Add a Windows installation to the boot list.
bootcfg /rebuild

Iterate through all Windows installations and allow the user to choose which
to add.

 Note

a.. You should first make a backup copy of your boot.ini file by using
bootcfg /copy before using bootcfg /rebuild.
bootcfg /scan

Scan all disks for Windows installations and display the results.

 Note

a.. These results are stored statically for this session. If the disk
configuration changes during this session, in order to get an updated scan,
you must first reboot the computer and then rescan the disks.
