MPEG:what rate to for good playback?

MPEG:what rate to for good playback?

Post by Brendon Macara » Fri, 27 Oct 1995 04:00:00

Folks:

I'm trying to create some MPEG2 audio files for download.

I'm using CoolEdit for Windows with the MPG filters
that allow the program to save MPG files.
But when I use Xing's MPEG playback
program, the files sound fast
(vocals like the Chipmunks...)

I've tried these rates during recording:
44Khz-16bit-stereo
22Khz-16bit and 8bit-stereo

Neither work, at least with the Xing player.

What are some of the reasons the
files sound too fast on playback?
Are there other datarates that might be better?
Could is also have to do with the fact
that the Xing freeware player plays back only mono
and not stereo sound?

Private email please, as I don't
frequent this newsgroup often.

Thanks,
-Brendon

Hi Brendon,

From what you've said, it sounds as though you're actually
looking for MPEG layer 2 audio, rather than MPEG2.

It's worth noting that some bitrates are not supported in
layer 2 audio. Most of the cheaper and nastier encoders do
not prevent you from encoding at a bitrate which the MPEG
spec says is illegal, so you either need to know the legal
bitrates, or you need to use an encoder which prevents you
from using the illegal ones (stating the obvious!)

The following information might help (taken from the
ISO/IEC 11172-3 specification).

Bit Rate (kbits/sec)              Allowed Modes

Free Format                       All modes
32                                Single channel (SC)
48                                SC
56                                SC
64                                All modes
80                                SC
96                                All modes
112                               All modes
128                               All modes
160                               All modes
192                               All modes
224                               Stereo, intensity stereo, dual chan.
256                               Ster, inten. stereo, dual chan.
320                               Ster, inten. stereo, dual chan.
384                               Ster, inten. stereo, dual chan.

Audio playing too fast is a typical symptom of encoding at an illegal bit
rate. Try one of the modes above.

I don't know how the Xing player works - if it can't play back stereo
MPEG audio at all, then this may be a fundamental limitation on the files
you can play. I'd suggest getting a file encoded at a legal bitrate, and
going from there. I'm afraid it might be trial and error.

Hope this helps,

Glenn
