IEEE Visual Languages 1999 announces the opening of its Web Forum on
"Visual Languages and Software Engineering"
at
The IEEE 1999 Symposium on Visual Languages (Tokyo, 13-16 September 1999) will host a number of special sessions, including a panel discussion on Visual Languages and Software Engineering. This panel will be based on the discussion in the above web forum and its results. All members of the SE and VL communities as well as other related fields are cordially invited to contribute to a lively and informed discussion.
Software Engineering is now increasingly relying on diagrammatic notations of the kind that is studied in the field of visual languages. The aim of this forum is to analyse the relationship between software engineering and visual languages and to clarify how they can interact to a mutual benefit. It will address problems at the intersection of these two fields, such as:
- Can we identify overlapping and similar tasks in both fields?
- Can we identify techniques and methods in either field
that could be transferred to the other field?
- Can we formulate open problems that should be solved in a common
effort?
The discussion will be held on a web-based automatic bulletin board: http://www.pst.informatik.uni-muenchen.de/~bmeyer/VL99/SEVL. At the same address you will also find an initial white paper that has been drafted by some discussion participants and suggests some preliminary answers to the above questions.
All organizational and technical details are explained at the same web page.
Please visit the forum's web site and participate actively.
We look forward to your contribution.
