The only thing I can think of is running a Repair in Windows XP. Haven't
tried it myself as I was hoping for an easier fix!.

You can carry out a Repair in Windows XP that will replace any damaged or
missing files that may be on your system. In theory, existing data and files
that are OK won't be touched but anything that needs replacing will be. I
wrote about this recently about this, here's the step by step process.

BEFORE you carry out the repair, look at this knowledge base article first
Q312369. It's about potential data loss after a repair is carried out.

Repair

1 First, you'll need to boot from the Windows XP installation CD. Your PC
may not be set up to do this in which case you'll need to enter the BIOS or
'Setup' when your PC boots. Pressing the Delete Key or F2 usually gets you
in. Once there, change the boot sequence so that your CD drive is the first
device.

2 When the PC boots up you'll see a blue screen. Don't press R for Recovery,
instead hit the Enter key to go into Setup. The licence agreement will
appear and after agreeing to this press R for Repair. Don't press Esc as
this will perform an 'over the top installation'.

3 Windows XP will start to Repair the installation. Make sure that you've
got your documentation to hand as you'll be asked to enter the serial number
again. The whole repair process takes about 30 - 45 minutes. Your input will
only be required if a problem crops up.

But will I have to re-install all my programs?

No, your programs should remain unffacted, it only deals with Windows files.
As a precaution you could set a restore point beforehand using System
Restore.
