How do I reinstall my CD/DVD driver for Windows XP 2002 home edition?

I think I accidentally removed my CD/DVD driver or it
became unstable because it isn't compatible with windows
media player or the roxio easy cd creator. I am so
confused but what I am sure of is that my local disk
drive (D:) is gone!!! My computer is a windows xp 2002
home edition. It came with a "drivers reinstallation" cd
but it isn't helping me at all. I hope you can help me.

Goto http://www.aumha.org/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website

There was a problem trying to register with Live Update.
Live Update will not be available for this product.

Then follows:  FATAL ERROR
Installation Ended prematurely because of an error.
