S5 versus S5mx

Post by Mike Urba » Mon, 01 Nov 1999 03:00:00

I want to buy a Psion 5mx but unfortunately I can't afford a new one
(approx. 390 UKP).
Therefore I'm considering a second-hand one, but they're selling for approx.
320 UKP (not much of a saving, and still a bit more than I can afford).
But the Psion 5 is easily available second-hand at anything from 150 - 200
UKP (often with some accessories).

My question is:- is it worth paying the extra for the 5mx?

I've used a Psion 5 and the two things that I felt could really do with some
improvement are the screen quality and processor speed (this only showed up
when the route finder was calculating its route though).

Is the new screen a great deal better?

Are there any other differences that I need to know about (e.g. internet
use)?

I would appreciate any advice,

Thanks, Mike.

I think it is- spreadsheet sorting, operators calculate in the right order,
etc. as bug fixes and improvements (or do I just mean improvements, like
Psion claim?).

Not that much, but I'd rather have the improvement, than not have it ;-)

Are you going to use it for the net? Or just email?

Probably just email. In fact, probably offline reading of newsgroups
mainly(download the messages on my PC, then transfer them to the Psion).

I'm glad you said that the newer screen isn't that much better - that
probably would have been the deciding factor.

using RMRnews for newsgroup reading really slow on the 5. And I mean REALLY,
so do consider that. :)

Do you mean reading - or downloading? And is the 5mx any faster?

RMRNews still has several slow spots (header view, mainly) on the 5mx.

Just checking - but have you considered shopping around for a Psion
Revo instead?  The Dixons price is 300 quid inc. VAT - so presumably
you could get significantly cheaper than that by shopping around.

Having played with a Revo last night (in dim pub lighting) - I can
attest to the screen quality being very much better than the 5mx's -
which in turn is noticably better than the 5.

I find my 5mx screen **much** better than that on the 5. My wife, who has
little interest in computers but sees the screen when I'm using
RoutePlanner in the car (while she drives) commented on this the first time
we had a long run.

It won't be *that* much faster on an mx.

However, I would agree it is slow, but I do think there will be some
improvements coming in the not too distant future.  OTOH, Psions *are*
just fundamentally SLOOOOW - and I'm finding this more and more
frustrating.  The mere doubling of speed on the mx isn't nearly
enough.  What's worse is that the 7's tripling of processor speed over
the mx appears to make no improvement to performance :-(

Seems I'm just talking myself into a Windross sub-notebook.  Shame I
can't afford one (and would still need a PDA for PDA purposes).

The 5mx is leagues ahead in terms of responsiveness, speed, reliability &
build quality. For me the screen is noticeably better. I like it very much,
whereas I thought the S5 was a piece of junk.

Err... Probably by checking the previews on 3Lib or Foxpop? You read
them?

Microwarehouse are selling 5MXs for 300 + VAT (which works out at about
350). This seems a better buy than the Revo...

Bought one last week from them. Free next day delivery included. The
price is what prompted me to buy. Cheapest I have seen.

Regards.
