Psion 5mx Hinge Problem!

Post by Brian Lewi » Sat, 02 Dec 2000 04:00:00

It's happened! I have a problem with the _hinge_ on my _5mx_.

The right-hand side of the hinge wire has become detached from the
casing (it's still correctly attached to the screen). It now moves
forward, allowing right hand side of the screen and keyboard to come
away from the case.

How do I open up the 5mx to get at the fixing point and re-attach the
wire?

Psion 5mx Hinge Problem!

The following is how I described my approach to a similar problem a few
months ago.  I had little to lose because the Series 5 is worth some 40
more than the repair cost.  Hope it helps.
David

Due to a moment of carelessness, whilst using the Psion & GPS to follow a
route through London, I managed to break the "hinge" on my S5.  My first
reaction was to send it straight back to Psion but since they wanted 80
for the repair I thought I had little to lose in taking the risk of trying
to repair it myself.

I'm not certain how I managed to break the hinge but it may have been by
closing it whilst holding the base "front to back".  Anyway, the symptom was
that the torsion spring that acts as the "hinge" protruded between the
screen and the cover over the battery compartment.  This prevented the
lid from closing properly and simply pushing the spring back into position
was not satisfactory because it kept popping out again!

So, after a quick backup I rather timorously removed the cover over the
base and cover over the battery compartment.  This revealed that a lug,
which secured the torsion spring to the right hand side of the frame, had
broken off.

With the prospect of an 80 bill egging me on I drilled a vertical hole of
about 1mm dia into the rear frame of the machine which is 1cm - 2cm thick at
this point.  I then relocated the torsion spring and secured it by inserting
a bent panel pin which was an interference fit in the hole.  Incidentally,
the hollow pins which secure the spring to the lid can be removed by
inserting a thin*driver into them and pressing sideways whilst pulling
it out.

So far, the repair has held up quite well.   I trust this may be of help to
those of you who, in similar circumstances are prepared to take the
consequences of possibly further damaging their machine for the
sake of 80.

All the best

David

I opened my S5 when it started randomly resetting itself, and when I
put it together again it still worked (except that it still randomly
reset itself) so it's possible to pull these apart and put them
together again. But go slowly, on a clear work surface with good
lighting.

First I looked on the web and found
http://www.aha.ru/~odating/s5inside/index.htm which gave some pictures
of a disassembled S5, so I had a sort-of-a-kind-of-an idea of what to
expect. But it didn't give much in the way of disassembly
instructions.

It's a long time ago, so I don't remember exactly what to do. But
there are 3 screws. One is covered by a sticker so that if you open it
they know the machine is no longer under warranty; that's beside the
backup battery. The second is on the other side, under the pen if you
open the CF hatch. The third is where you open the cover of the main
battery. ISTR the bottom could be slid off at that point, although
getting it over the 3 little recording buttons was a bit tricky. The
back comes off as well, IIRC that was even trickier.

Hope some of that was helpful.
