Installing Win32s for Merlin?

Installing Win32s for Merlin?

Post by rodsm.. » Tue, 29 Oct 1996 04:00:00

I've one application (SPSS for Windows, a statistical package) that
I really must have working under OS/2.  It worked fine under 3.0,
but of course since upgrading to 4.0 it no longer works because the
Win32s support vanished along with my old copy of Windows.  So,
how can I re-install this support?  When I try running the Win32s
install routine included on the SPSS floppies, my machine locks up
hard (the mouse vanishes and even <Ctrl-Alt-Del> doesn't help).
Ditto for attempts at a full re-install of SPSS.

Rod, you can download the Win32s 1.25 code from hobbes in the /windows
directory (off the root). Warp 4.0 contains SUPPORT for Win32s 1.25a,
but does NOT contain the Win32s code.

Also, make sure that the line DEVICE=x\OS2\MDOS\VW32S.SYS appears in
your config.sys file to load the Win32s support.

Filename is:

W32s125.zip     2270907 Dec 24  1995  Microsoft Win32s v1.25

Unzip and install in a WinOS2 session. If you install FREECELL, you can
test it.

I had Win32s support loaded in Warp Connect (blue) using the newer
VW32S.SYS beta and the new os2krnl file along with FP22. Installed Warp
4.0 as an upgrade OVER Warp Connect, and all is well. Can even run
Visual Foxpro (but NOT Photoshop 3.0).

FWIW, I had a similar problem with ArcView (a mapping program), whose
publishers in their wisdom
"upgraded" to run only with Win32s 1.3.  What I had to do was reinstall my
_old_ version of AV and select _only_ the w32s portion of the installation.
That way, I got a w32s 1.15 or whatever supplement to my system.  (No idea
if this supercedes or merely adds onto the 1.25a "support" from Warp.
Thereafter, the new AV worked, but
with no help screens whatsoever.  Not exactly a good solution, but the other
portions of the program are now working under Warp4.0 at least.

Something similar might work for you with an _older_ version of SPSS if it
carries its own w32s install facility.
