I'm hoping that someone who does attend can give us a few 'net reports
from this event!  (Many of us can't make it out to Chicago to attend) :(

Specifically:  Overall comdex report & a detailed report of the Merlin
showing.  (Someone usually always pull through and presents a nice
report. - Whoever you may be, thanks in advance from several thousand
OS/2 lurkers here!)

Everyone I talked to at the show was quite up front about it(Merlin)
being alpha-level code at the moment. Beta is expected in a
couple of weeks.

It did freeze during the private Team OS/2 demo on Monday.
To be fair, the machine that they were going to use for
the demo got appropriated beforehand. They had to scramble
to get everything setup. The hang might also have something
to do with trying to show the (alpha-level) dictation code
on a 486 w/only 24MB of RAM. ;-)

I thought the presentation was very informative but seemed to be a bit
long-winded on the voice technology and not enough on actually using it. It
would've helped if he also had a machine that ran at the required speed for
the product instead of running a 75Mhz Pentium. You'd think that IBM would
supply him with the hardware he needed to effectively demonstrate the product.
I do look forward to it coming out though and was impressed with the
presentation. I just want to know one thing: Where were the Merlin mouse pads?
:)

I didn't get to see the full demostration of Merlin (because it froze). For those of us who didn't
want to spend 495.00  or have the time to see everything going on at Spring Comdex
we had to see it on the main floor. I will be seeing at our monthly sig group in two weeks.
Yes it was the alpha version.
My question is now Who is further ahead in their next version OS/2 or Window NT ?

The Wednesday morning show was free...?  Apparently they had more
than one showing, which may be part of everyone's confusion.  The Wed. morning
show was pretty good, I think.

I think they are about the same, if you count the interface upgrade to
Windows NT.  Cairo is now several years late...I believe in the 1998 time
frame?

I am not sure about IBM, but *right* *now*, I am running NT 4.0 beta 1, and it is
very stable.  OS/2 crashes more than an NT *beta*!  Well, maybe merlin will
be released before NT 4.0.  I am not sure.  All I know is that Microsoft is
far cooler since it is relatively easy to get a hold of a *cool* beta.

I would also love to have Merlin, but IBM is *not* cool, in that a *normal*
person can't get Merlin betas.

I never did like IBM's attitude about betas.  It's not like MS is going to copy
IBM or anything.  IBM *should* copy NT's great architecture design, however.

NT's architectural design was copied from IBM's System 38 and AS/400s---which
ran Microsoft's corporate processing, particularly during the time NT was being
gestated.  You can bet DEC took apart AS/400s for study, considering the threat
to its busines the AS/400 posed (the AS/400 division outsold the entire DEC with
its three OSes) . That's why IBM's AS/400 division and its tech heads like Dr.
Frank Soltis always makes quips about NT being "New Technology".  IBM had
modular object based architectures featuring a layered OS design and a HAL since
1978, when the System 38 debuted. If anything the architectural design in the
OS/400 remained much purer in concept than NT, which now have graphics systems
consolidated into the kernel. By the way, OS/2, and to my impression, the
Unixes, don't consolidate their graphics systems in the kernel.

I am John Ominor, The Inhuman.  How pathetic.  How droll.  How predictable.
IBM has made OS/2 Warp, OS/2 Warp Server, and OS/2 Warp Server SMP betas
publicly available.  IBM is not in the habit of release alpha code onto the
masses, unlike Microsoft and its Windows 95 debacle.

It seems that the closer OS/2 gets to its release date, the more foolish
some Windows advocates become.

Do not turn this newsgroup into a den of lies.
