Calc from 2.11 won't load in Warp 4

Post by Don Hobsba » Tue, 26 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I successfully ran the calculator from OS/2 2.11 in Warp 3 for a long
time. Now, having upgraded to Warp 4, I tried installing it and it no
longer wants to load.

It seems to consist of only 4 files in a directory (all pmd*.* files) plus
pmdiary.ini in the root directory. the .ini file now no longer seems to be
accessed at boot (the date no longer changes regularly).

Does anyone know what I might need to do? (I am an accountant and love
having this light, quick calculator sitting at the bottom right of my
screen all the time...)

Don,

When you post a problem, it's really helpful if you include the exact text
of error message(s) that you might see.  The trouble is, a phrase like "no
longer wants to load" could mean a lot of things, each with its own
possible solution.

That said, I'll simply note that the 2.11 applets had several DLLs which
went along with them.  If these DLLs are no longer accessible, you'll get
error messages when you try to start the applet from an OS/2 command
session.

<If> that's the problem you're seeing, here's one way of making it work:

 1) Make sure the first directory entry in LIBPATH is .;
    That is, LIBPATH=.;C:\whatever...
This ensures that DLLs in the "current" directory can be used.

 2) Assuming the applet files (including DLLs) are in C:\21APPLET, set
    up your WPS objects with
File: full path and filename of EXE file
    Working directory: C:\21APPLET

Hope this helps...

Yes.  The PM Diary applets (including the calculator) must be properly
installed.  Since Warp 4 deletes them from wherever OS/2 2.11
installed them, you need to manually do the installation.  There are a
few things you need to do:

1: put PMDCTLS.DLL and PMDIARY.DLL somewhere on your LIBPATH.
PMDCTLS.DLL is in the \OS2\DLL directory of OS/2 2.11 and does not
exist in 4.0.  You'll have to take it from another installation, or
unpack it from your OS/2 2.11 install disk(s).  PMDIARY.DLL comes
   from the \OS2\APPS\DLL directory.

2: Put the help file PMDIARY.HLP somewhere on the DPATH or HELP path,
as defined by the DPATH and HELP environment variables in
   config.sys.

You don't need to do a thing to PMDIARY.INI.  It will be recreated as
necessary.  It is created in the directory the program is launched
from.

I ran into the same problem, and just got it working. You will need to
get the following 4 files from your old installation (they can be
found in the same folders as the ones mentioned below):

        PMDCALC.EXE     - put it in x:\OS2\APPS

        PMDIARY.DLL     - put these two in x:\OS2\APPS\DLL
        PMDIARYF.DLL

        PMDCTLS.DLL     - put it in x:\OS2\DLL

That's all it takes.

Ooops - I forgot to mention one more file:

        PMDIARY.HLP     - put it in x:\OS2\HELP

This one isn't absolutely necessary, but you get an error message
(which you can ignore) if you don't have it.

Don, with Warp 4 you also need the functions supplied in pmdctls.dll.  This was
part of the original pmdiary suite.

Just get pmdctls.dll from the disks or cd-rom from OS/2 2.1.  Place the dll in
the same directory as the rest of the calculator files (you need pmdcalc.exe,
pmdiary.dll, pmdiary.hlp and pmdiaryf.dll plus the pmdctls.dll).  Make sure
that .; starts your config.sys LIBPATH line and that you have the correct
directory path in the directory field.

They apparently changed Warp4 from Warp3 so as not to provide some of
the functions contained in pmdctls.dll.

You also need

PMDIARY.HLP     - in a directory on your HELP path

to suppress warnings every time you start the program.

Yes, but I'd pick other directories.  If you put them in directories
under \OS2, then they will get erased by the OS/2 installer.  (Do you
want to have to do this again when version 5 comes out in a few
years?)

You should put the EXE anywhere on your PATH
You should put the DLLs anywhere on your LIBPATH
You should put the HLP anywhere on your HELP path

Dave;

Do you have the old PIM apps working on a Warp 4 system? And withOUT a
copy of Warp 3 anywhere on the system also? If so, I'd like to know
how. I've dragged this whole PIM along since 2.0 and I like the
simplicity of several of the apps included in it, especially the
calendar and and the To-Do List. Unfortunately, I can't make the work
on a clean 4.0 system running on an older DX2/66. The main culprit
appears to be PMDCTLS.DLL which was included with Warp 3 even though
the apps weren't. Attempting to run any of the PIM apps on v.4 causes
them to fail asking for PMDCTLS.DLL. Putting a copy of the .DLL on my
Warp 4 system caused it to lock up. I've tried this with the .DLL
extracted from 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0 although some of them appeared to be
the same. Anyone else got it working on 4 without a reachable copy of
3?

I copied PMDCTLS.DLL from my Warp Connect installation, and it worked
perfectly. Don't know why yours wouldn't work - did you put it in the
x:\OS2\DLL folder?

1. 2.11 installs, but Warp won't

Someone posted that the IBMKBD.SYS file on the Warp installation disk is bad,
but I have no IBMKBD.SYS on 2.11, so I have nothing to replace it.  I have a
promise IDE VLB controller & have noted the postings regarding adding /!SMS,
but this generates an error when I try it.  Basically the problem is lockup
(blank screen except for blinking cursor in upper left portion of screen) about
40 secs. after feeding the 2nd inst. disk (disk 1).  The CDROM driver
(MITFX001.ADD) is loading O.K. & I tried replacing that too with the latest
from cdrom.  In summary I've tried everything I can think of & can't even get
started.  Unless I use the old 2.11 installation disks.  Then I can get started
but the system crashes the 1st time it boots from the HDD.  I've also tried
REMing out the two potential problem statements (BASEDEV=IBMKBD.SYS &
IBM1S506.ADD just for fun (call this fun? :/).  Did not have any effect on the
problem.  Not that I would expect the system to work this way, but I a least
expected something different like an error message, not an identical hang-up.
This makes me think that neither of these files are the problem.

It might be easy to blame this problem on the hardware (32 bit OSs are much
more demanding on the hardware, blah blah blah).  Then tell me why 2.11 went on
this same machine without a hitch?  Help!!!
