Socond IDE port dead?

Socond IDE port dead?

Post by Dirk Rackl » Sat, 06 Apr 1996 04:00:00

Well after three days of mucking around, and three different
controller cards trying to get a Toshiba 5402 IDE cd-rom
working on the second port I'm stumped.

The drive is ok as it works as slave on the primary port, but I
can't get anything working on the second.

Is there some sort of diagnostic that can tell me what is happening
with the second port?

Mother board is Vesa/PCI, 24 meg memory Pentium 66, Award BIOS.

Thanks

Socond IDE port dead?

Not a diagnostic, but a command line switch.  Try editing your CONFIG.SYS
to read:

BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /V /A:1 /ATAPI

I'm not at my Warp machine right now, or I would have the exact answer
for you, but you can try

HELP IBM1S506.ADD

for a complete list of valid command line switches.

Socond IDE port dead?

==========

Try disabling the second port in the BIOS.  I had to do this to get
a third drive recognized in my Gateway system.  As long as you
boot from a drive in the first controller, you shouldn't have any
problems with using the second controller as the IBM drivers
should find and configure it (at least this is what happened in
my system).

The IBM1s506.add driver has switches (the /ATAPI one is what
you're interested in -- the ATAPI archive on Hobbes has the
documentation for the switch, along with an updated driver) that
will allow you to set the parameters needed for the CD-ROM.  Make
sure you have the Master/Slave switch set properly for the drive.

The /V (verbose) switch can help a lot when trying to figure out
what is going on.  I do not know how much of the above applies
if your system needs the cmd640x.add drivers (that seem to go
with the newer Seagates).

Hope this helps.
