Confusion/Can't Boot/Can't Re-install/Help!

Post by Robert Harve » Wed, 29 May 1996 04:00:00

 Here I go...

 Background:
I was born... NO no no... not that far back. Sorry I'm frazzled.

I just upgraded to a P120 and added a second hard drive.
I have an Adaptec AHA-2940 SCSI Card.
 2 HD's
 Toshiba 4X CD
Dimond Stealth 64 DRAM (2 meg.) (Never Again!!!!) I still do
not have good drivers for this.

 Problems:

I can not boot into OS/2 (it locks up at the os/2 warp logo).
I can not reinstall OS/2 (locks up on disk 1 one at logo).

 Info I have found:

 - Adaptec Web site mentions a driver I can get to work with warp.
OK. I'll get it. I *ASSUME* that I am suppose to put this on the
disk 1 and changed the config.sys to use it?

 - FP 17 (mentioned at above) the notes on FP17 mention this fixes
installing OS/2 on a machine with an AHA-2940

QUESTION: Don't I have to install Warp or at least succesfully boot
to warp the install the FIX pack?

Can you install the Fix pack to the warp install diskettes or can
I install the Fix Pack from DOS to the Warp I have installed on my
 machine?

Am I destined to live my life in DOS/Windoze??????
 Please say it ins't so.

 Thanx,

 Robert

Robert,

I had a lot of problems with my AHA-2940. I finally found that the
only way I could boot in Warp, with the original VGA drivers, was to
rem out the AIC7870.ADD line and the BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD line, and add
a BASEDEV=IBMINT13.I13 and a BASEDEV=IBM2SCSI.ADD lines. After
installing the Tseng4000Ww32p drivers for my graphics card, I was able
to put the AIC/DMD lines back in config.sys. But I also upgraded to
the latest Adaptec driver.

Good luck!

Jose' Bernardo:
Have You upgraded disk 0 (inst) and 1  to latest level?
And then upgrade the all thing to CSD 17 or any higher Fixpack!

Hello Robert,
            "It isn't so"!!

I also have the Adaptec 2940 and wanted to re-install to my service
partition a couple of days ago.
The problem is caused by device drivers on Warp Installation Diskette 1
(the second boot diskette).
If you press alt-F2 when you see the white rectangle in the upper left
corner during the boot process, you can see which particular device driver
is causing the problem. In my case it would hang on one of the Sony CDROM
device drivers and after removing that, on the Adaptec 1542 driver.

The solution is to either make a copy of the second boot diskette, or create
another one from the floppy diskette images on the CD using LOADDSKF.
Then delete the device drivers from the diskette that are not required for
the equipment on your system and edit the config.sys to remove the
references to the deleted device drivers.

Everything should go smoothly after that.

You mentioned you might obtain the updated device driver for the
AHA-2940 from the Adaptec site. If you do, you can replace IBM's AIC7870.ADD
driver on the second disk with Adaptec's and add the SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1
statement to the config.sys so that the updated driver is copied to the hard
disk in preference to the one on the CDROM. It's probably easier just to add
it manually later on though.

You can also create a set of install disks that are current to the fix level
on your system, though that may not actually provide a solution to your
problem.
There are instructions on how to do this on IBM's technical database, URL:

http://ps.boulder.ibm.com/pbin-usa-ps/pub_huic.pl

under `Updating OS/2 Warp Installation Diskettes'.

OS/2 has a problem with multiple viable primary partions or something
to that effect.  I went throught the same thing a few weeks ago. It
seems that my e: partition and my cd-rom were fight over that drive
letter.  When I used partition magic to hide that partion. Everything
worked fine. I just couldn't access the e: part.

If you couldn't boot, how did you use Partition Magic?

I can't speak for Tim but at my office we regularly run Partition Magic for
OS/2 while booted from a DOS floppy. Partition Magic doesn't care (even for
HPFS partitions) and DOS floppies boot much faster than OS/2 ones.

I found the source of my problems. It was the Adaptec 2940 Controller.
The v1.11 bios wouldn't work with OS/2 on the trident chipset. Got
it updated and everything works great. Thanx for all the Help
