Light Table folder problems

Post by Larry Bouthillie » Tue, 27 Jun 1995 04:00:00

I love the Multimedia Light Table folders included with Warp.  But I seem
to have a problem with mine.  They worked for a while, mostly, but would
occasionally cause the WPS to crash.  When I opened it, the disk would
thrash incessantly until the WPS went down and reloaded.  I surmised that
this might have been due to the a bug in the Light Table code that causes
a crash when creating a thimbnail for a corupt image.

But lately, every time I try to open any Light Table object, the disk
goes nuts, the system slows to a crawl (preventing me from doing anything
else), and after a few minutes, the WPS goes down in flames.  Of course,
background tasks continue to run and when the WPS comes back up,
everything is fine (although all my open folders are closed and the Light
Table is closed).

Is this a known Light Table bug?  Is there a fix?  Is it video driver
related?  (I have Cirrus 543x PCI video with the latest drivers from the
Cirrus BBS).

A possible solution would be to use only onee typee of fill peer folder.
i.e. all *.gif, all *.jpg, etc
I have also noticed that certain gifs will either kill a lightfollder or
lock up the WPS.  I don't remember right off hand which type it was.
The eeasiest way to find out is to watch the loading procces and note
the name of a few of the gifs before the problem occurs, then move the
next 5 to a diff. LF and try again if problems occur then you know its a
gif problem.

I experienced a bug.  I noticed that if the Light Table folder or
any folder above it has a space in the name (the default name of
a Light Table folder is "Light Table") then double clicking on
the frame to view the picture doesn't work.  I get the disk activity
and system slowdown but no picture display.  Haven't noticed any
WPS crashes though.

Can anyone repeat?

Larry,

This problem has come up for discussion before.  I believe it is a Light Table
bug.  Certain gifs will cause the light table to grind away until it uses up
all your swap space.  My experience has been that this is more of a problem
with grey scale gifs though it did happen to me once with a color gif. Perhaps
too many occurences of a single value sends the light table into an infinite
loop.

Unfortunately I do not know of any fix for this.

I have found that if I drag too many object to a Light Table folder the
WPS falls over and cannot recover. If I let the light table create less
than ten object at a time then it works fine. This appears to be a bug
in the WPS. I say this because I have a FTP application that use the WPS
and folders to pull the info off a FTP server. The author of the app
suggests that if the site has a large number of objects you must
minimise the target folder or reduce the number of objects you are
attempting to create. Apparently the WPS was not supposed to create
large numbers of objects on the DESKTOP in fast succession.

I have encountered this phenomenon before.  Several times a particular GIF
would cause a light table reference to fail as seen above.  My solution was to
have a test light table folder and create the light table reference to that
folder.  If this caused the error then I could delete the test folder and
try again with a different GIF.  If the reference created a correct light
table object then I could drag it over to my production light table folder.

The danger with using only one light table folder is that if you get a
reference created in that folder there is usually no way to clear up the
problem with out deleting the entire folder.
