Syquest 270MB removable drive and OS/2 ?

Post by Hansjuergen Dreu » Wed, 12 Oct 1994 01:48:58

Hi !

I am considering purchasing a Syquest 270MB (SCSII) removable drive and would
like to know, wether there is a driver available for OS/2.
Does anybody have some experience with this drive under OS/2 ?
Thanks

You can use your Syquest on 2 ways : like a big floppy, but access is
terribly slow. Or you can use lockdrv.flt (lockdrv.zip on cdrom.com) so you
can use your syquest as another harddisk. With the first option your
Syquest is slow, but you still have removability, with the second option,
you loose that removability. I myself use the lockdrv.flt and i'ts like i have
another harddisk in my system.
If you use lockdrv.flt then you have to fdisk and format the disk. When you
fdisk your cartridge, just create one extended partition. Fdisk will skip
1MB and make the rest completely extended. Just format the extended
partition with the file system you like and you have another drive letter
that is placed between your hd's and a cd-rom. My drive-lettering is as
follow (under OS/2):

HD1  Quantum Scsi HD   Primary    50MB DOS          C:
                       Extended  140MB OS/2         D:
                       Extended    8MB OS/2 Minimal E:
     Syquest 270MB     Primary     1MB Unformatted <-- Important!!
                       Extended  265MB HPFS         F:
     Toshiba CD-ROM                    CDFS         G:

When fdisking the cartridge, you just select extended partitions. That 1MB
primary one is always created but you must leave it unformatted, otherwise
your drive-lettering is corrupted and probably you won't be able to boot
OS/2 anymore.

Greetz,

Ringo.

Interesting... what SCSI card are you using?  A friend of mine has had no luck
getting the SyQuest to work, but he is using an Adaptec 1640 Micro Channel
card, and I suspect that Micro Channel stuff isn't tested much these days...
Though I suppose the 1 MB unformatted may be an idea to try out...
