GTAK problems

Post by Walter Re » Wed, 08 Feb 1995 23:45:01

I'm running GTAK 2.43 (and GTAR) on a PS/2 9557 with an Exabyte 4200 DAT
tape drive.  I have tried all three drivers and all three work, but
crash the system after a few megs are written to the tape.  When I say
crash, I mean the drive light stays on and C-A-DEL won't even work.

I do have BackupWiz and it does work with this drive so I know that I should
be able to get GTAR to work with this configuration.

BTW, the 9557 has a SCSI-I port so I have been using mode S0...

Also running OS/2 WARP GA.

Has anyone been able to run GTAK on a PS/2?

Which adapter's in your machine?

Which GTAK driver are you using?

My machine is a PS/2 model 57 (9557) so the SCSI port is built into the
motherboard.  I have tried all three GTAK drivers - SCSITAPE.DMD,
ASPITAPE.SYS, and SCSITAPE.SYS.  All three work, but crash the system after
about 1-5M has been transfered to the tape.  I am using WARP.
The tape drive (Exabyte 4200 DAT) does work with BackupWiz, but I would
rather use GTAR.

OK- when you say "crash", does the mouse move?
Is there an activity light on your SCSI controller? Does it (or the activity
(usually amber) light on the tape drive) stay on continuously at the time
of failure?

Do a "tape mode" and post the output of that. You might have a blocksizing
problem, or a SCSI (cabling) problem. It's very well possible that GTAK
is xferring more data than BWiz, and that cable/termination problems are
causing a SCSI device hang.

S0 or S2 does not depend on the SCSI host adapter but on the SCSI
level of the tape drive. However S0 works with a SCSI-2 drive too.

I regularly use GTAK on a PS/2 9577 and did use it on models 8557,
9556 and 8590 earlier. However there are several different models
56/57 and 77, which appearently have only model number and casing in
common (not just the difference between 8556 and 9556 but different
9556 machines too). I have seen a PS/2 9556 where the OS/2 installer
installed some 01 (ISA) type device driver (kbd, clock, or some of
that) instead of the usual 02 (MCA) type. And the numerous ABIOS
patches...

GTAK problems

I have problems setting up GTAK as well, seems it crashes (halts my system)
as well -- using Adaptec 1542CF SCSI-II controller.  I know the controller
and tape drive are good as they work without a hitch under Linux 1.1.92.
Anyone know the command line options to the controller driver under OS/2
WARP (driver for 1542CF)?

I would like to backup my hpfs system.

1. gtar/gtak problem.

Hi all,

I've been having problems getting gtar/gtak to work with
my setup, and I was wondering if anyone else had it working with
this configuration, or knew anything more that could help.

The relevant parts of machine:

486 DX/2 66MHz
Adaptec AHA1520 SCSI card
PAS SCSI sound card
SONY (DT-1000?  DT-4000?) DDS DAT drive.
OS/2 Warp 3.0 (Fixpack 17)
gtak/gtar 2.51

Currently SCSI support for the PAS is commented out.  I have a
Hitachi 514C hard drive and a Toshiba 3401 CD rom drive connected
to the Adaptec, with SCSI id's 4 and 0 respectively.  The Adaptec
itself is id 7.  The SONY is attached to the Adaptec externally, and
is set to id 6.

I've tried using both the aspitape.sys and scsitape.dmd drivers.
The latter dies quietly, and the former reports that it cannot
successfully get id info from the SONY before it dies.

To further confound me, I also boot Linux with tape support in the
kernel, and it has no trouble finding and using the tape drive at
all.

        Anyone have any thoughts?

                                        Ted.
