Hello!
Over a month ago I bought BA/2 Pro v4.0a via a mail order from
Indelible Blue. I still can't install it as the installation program
crashes with SYS3175 just after the screen where I select install
options (SCSI, ATAPI/IDE, CONFIG.SYS update, create WPS object).
I had few e-mail iterations with the CDS tech support (Brent Bowlby)
and also got another diskette from CDS just in case the crash had been
caused by a damaged diskette. Both diskettes had identical file
names, sizes, dates and CRCs and produced identical SYS3175 crash
at identical installation moment, so I think the reason is not a
damaged diskette (or CDS have a problem copying from the master
disk which is unlikely as many more customers would have this crash).
The periods of time between e-mail replys of the CDS tech support
are too long for my taste (about two weeks since the last e-mail
where I told that "the development will look into it") so I'm
asking for help from the WARP gurus on the net in parallel to
the CDS tech. support, whichever helps first. Here's the description
of my system:
Board: double Pentium board PB5800B (by MITAC) with 512K cache.
Chipset by VLSI, I don't remember the number.
CPU: one P-120
Memory: 32MB, 60 nSec, not EDO.
Disk: 1GB SCSI, IBM 31080, SCSI ID: 0.
Controller: NCR PCI SCSI 53C810, not on board, jumpered to use
INTRA, level triggered (if memory serves, it's
connected to IRQ11.).
Video: ATI Mach64 GPT 2MB VRAM, no EEPROM, driver: v2.01.
Sound: SB16 (Vibra16) with IDE port set up as secondary.
The sound chip uses port 220 and IRQ5.
CD: Creative CD-220E connected as master to the secondary IDE
port of the SB16.
Tape: HP C1533, SCSI ID: 3.
Modem: USR Sportster 28.8K set up as COM3/IRQ7
I/O: Standard IDE+FDC+serial+parallel+game card with only FDC,
serials and parallel enabled. COM1 and COM2 use standard IRQs.
The 3.5" drive is A:, running CHKDSK on the installation diskette
didn't find any error.
I'm running WARP fullpack, HEBREW version, no fixpacks
installed (I think it has been shipped at FP5 level).
The device drivers part of my CONFIG.SYS looks like this:
REM ====== BASE DEVICE DRIVERS ======

I also attempted to add "/!Q" parameter to the
BASEDEV=OS2CAM.ADD /DM:0 /SM:0 /!SN
line but got the same crash with SYS3175.
Later, I conducted another experiment: I turned off both caches to
slow the machine down so I'd be able to see what happens just before
the crash. I managed to see the floppy drive LED turns ON and
a window opens with a message that the files are copyed from the
floppy to the directory on disk I gave at the previous screen and
the SYS3175 crash happens half a second later. I conducted few
more experiments: created a copy of the install diskette with
DISKCOPY and deleted the main data file (BA2INST) to check if
any "file not found" message will appear. The result: no message
and exactly the same SYS3175 crash. I also filled in the destination
directory on non-existing disk to check if this will bring any
error message, but got the same result: SYS3175. It seems like the
crash happens at the first access to the floppy (or maybe among
the few first accesses). I changed few times the CMOS settings of
DMA (8,16) speed, wait states and clock source and all values that didn't
prevented my machine from booting resulted in the same SYS3175 crash.
At this point all my knowledge has been exausted (I'm running WARP
less than a year) and I'm listening to any suggestion (exept
reprogramming my machine with a very large axe :-) ).
Please note that my WARP if of HEBREW version. I have no idea
if it's relevant or not but I would like to know if anyone with
Hebrew varsion of WARP fullpack managed to install BA/2 Pro v4.0a.
I remember reading on some totally unrelated topics that updating
some PM DLLs solved some crash problems (PMMERGE.DLL, maybe other).
Since the installation program is PM, it's not impossible that some
PM DLL is causing this. If anybody had some strange SYS3175 crashes
that were cured by updating some PM DLL, I would like to know about it.
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP ! ! !
P.S: CDS, I think you need more manpower at the tech. support department.
