KVM-switch advice requested

Post by Terr » Thu, 02 Aug 2001 00:38:52

I'm in the middle of research for the purchase of an 8-12 CPU KVM switch,
likely for Sparcs, but I may go with multi-OS.  I'd like On Screen Display
and/or TCP/IP control.

Does anyone have any tips/warnings/recommendations?
Thanks,

See my answer in the other newsgroup.  Oh, and please learn to cross
post; don't multi-post.

You might want to look at the Cybex or Avoccent Autoview 400.
It uses different cables to support different hardware, and should
have the features - except TCP/IP control??  (I have not seen this on
any KVM switch.)

Belkin has a Sun Adapter for their OmniView switches, but the mouse
is a little slow, and it gets expensive - around $95/Sun box.

For Sun Sparcs only I'd be inclined to use one of the new models of 16
port terminal server (terminal concentrator if you like, but not for
use within a clustered environment).

For a hetero environment I believe Belkin do 'smart' KVM switches which
send a 'fake' signal to the k/b socket so the server doesn't receive a
break signal when the k/b is switched into place, and in any case get
the break signal issue patched or fixed in Solaris so that a power loss
on one of the older terminal servers doesn't send a break to your
entire herd!

I was under the impression that people didn't want me to cross-post, but I
get the hint, I will cross-post from now on.

returning to console server suppliers--we have one from "Aurora".
we have over 16 machines hooked up to it, and it's growing fast.
i can't think of any problems.

Avocent DS-1800.  Expensive, but there's a promo for up to 1 at $5000.  Ours is
on the way.

1. Good advice for a KVM switch for Sun and PC systems?

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good KVM switch that is equally at home on SUN as
well as PC systems?

Looking for a solution for my datacenter with mixed NT and Solaris OSs. Have
a total of 16 systems (3 are SUN boxes.)

Thanks!
