Virtual LAN cards

Virtual LAN cards

Just curious if it is possible to "fool" hp-ux (10.20) into thinking
it has 2 LAN cards when in fact it only has one?

We use some propriety software that requires 2 LAN cards but have a HP
J2240 with only one LAN card. The software doesn't start unless it
sees 2.

Even if it is possible into linking the one LAN card twice I am sure
this will do.

Thanks for any ideas.

Does your software look for two software devices, for two Macadresses (=two
hardwaredevices) or for two IP-addresses? Did you try a IP-alias?

No. At least not for anything using DLPI. If you were running 11i
(11.11) there is support for VLANs you can install (a la the IEEE
stuff) that might do what you need.

I would think that a used HP PCI or EISA-formfactor HSC 10/100BT card
would be pretty cheap these days.

If instead you mean the software wont run unless it seens two _IP_
addresses (which is not the same thing as having two LAN cards) then
as someone else pointed-out you could install and use
ifalias. However, both IPs will still be associated with the single
LAN card.

where do you want to be today?
these opinions are mine, all mine; HP might not want them anyway... :)
feel free to post, OR email to raj in cup.hp.com  but NOT BOTH...

Hi.
I suspect the software is looking for 2 physical hardware devices. I
will give the IP-alias thing a bash in the meantime and see what
happens.

Thanks

1. How to find Primary/Backup LAN & Virtual IPs

Folks,

I have 2 network related questions. Hope some gurus might help me out.

(We have both HP-UX10.20 & 11.0 servers)

1. How to find Primary/Backup LAN

How can one determine, which is Primary LAN card & which is backup LAN
card? Not able to figure out the Primary/Backup info from any of the
commands.

This is on the assumption that one doesn't have any physical/visual
access to Servers and no prior knowledge on how the machine is
configured.

Here is the extract from lanscan.

Hardware Crd Hdw   Net-Interface  NM  MAC       HP-DLPI DLPI
Path     In# State NamePPA        ID  Type      Support Mjr#
0/0/0/0  0   UP    lan0 snap0     1   ETHER     Yes     119
1/10/0/0 6   UP    lan6 snap6     3   ETHER     Yes     119
1/12/0/0 7   UP    lan7 snap7     4   ETHER     Yes     119
0/2/0/0  3   UP    lan3 snap3     5   ETHER     Yes     119
0/4/0/0  4   UP    lan4 snap4     6   ETHER     Yes     119
0/5/0/0  5   UP    lan5 snap5     7   ETHER     Yes     119

Based on the configuration I was told, I know that in our case, lan5 is
backup to lan7, lan4 is backup to lan6 and lan3 is backup to lan0.

But from which commands/utilities, would I be able to find this info?

2. How to find Virtual/Physical IPs

I know that I can get find this info from <netstat -in> & <ifconfig
[lan#]>. But is there a way or a script which can tell that info,
irrespective of the OS level. (10.20 or 11.x). Output of <neststat>
differs significantly from 10.20 to 11.0

Let me know, if you have any questions.

TIA,
Siva
