Guru's - I have an apollo hp 735 workstation with 2 each 1 gig scsi hdd's
currently running hpux 9.03 (!).  Needlesss to say, 9.xx is NOT year 2K
compliant <grin>.  I'd like to run 10.20, but the source tape I have demands
that the boot, root and swap partitions all be contiguous and on the same
physical drive, even though I have LVM and both disks in the same volume
group (i.e. 2 gigs space).  The installation program says that I have about
200 megs too little space for its installation, and refuses to run, no
matter how I mangle the setup parameters.  So - does anyone have a spare 2
gig or so scsi hdd they might be able to send to this dweller in the

There is nothing special about the /stand, swap and root lvols -- all
versions of 10.xx and 11.xx require the contiguous arrangement. However,
2 Gb is plenty of room for the opsystem as long as you change the
defaults for the lvols.  To get started, use:

       /stand = 50 megs
       /      = 100 megs
       swap   = 50 megs
       /var   = 500 megs
       /usr   = 500 megs
       /opt   = 500 megs
       /home  = 100 megs

That leaves 200 megs free.  However, in 10.20, you can create a multi-
disk vg00.  Always use the interactive (advanced) menu.  At that point,
you can create a 4 Gb vg00 and significantly increase /var and perhaps
/opt and still ave plenty leftover.  You can have multiple swap lvols
so the small 50 meg primary swap area is fine.

Thank you for the reply,

The trouble is I have 1 (one) gig HDD's, and the  install doesn't seem to
want to span across my 2 HDD's (each only 1 gig big).  Adding up your lvols
gives me 1.8 gigs, which won't fit (afaik <g>) into a 1 gig HDD.

I did - I used the interactive menu., added the second HDD to the same
volume group (vg00), and used LVM.  It still didn't like me....I'll go back
into it again and try some more, but the previous 3 hours kept coming up
with errors.  OTOH, I have just received a very nice offer for 2 gig HDD's
to swap out my small 1 gig HDD's.  That will solve the problem nicely...

ou can also put some of the non-critical lvols on another disk in a
second vg, vg01. That is the way we have done it in the past, such as
/var/adm/sw/patch and /opt. You will have to do an lvchange -a y vg01
and then mount the filesystems on the second disk if you have to run
single user mode.

1. Ultra160 SCSI HDD and Apollo 735

Hi!

I've a little question... I'm trying to connect a new Ultra160 Wide SCSI
(LVD) hard disk (Quantum Atalas V) to old HP Apollo 735 workstation but
computer can't recognize new SCSI device... SCSI bus is going down when
I connect this drive... Nothing is visible... Even if this new drive is
the only one device on the bus...

Workstation has Fast Wide Differential SCSI. New HDD is Ultra160 Wide
(LDV). Can I connect ultra160 hard drive to Fast Wide Differential
interface at all? If yes, why it doesn't work?

I've try several combinations of jumpers configurations and different
terminators. Also try using old drive as terminating device... With no
success...

Thanks in advance,

Sebastian
