How to boot a 715/50 non-graphically?

Hi!

We have a 715/50 -- how can we boot it non-graphically?
Right now it starts, shows a console and then tries to start the
graphical login -- but fails. Then the screen goes black.

How can we change back to the ITE console now?

You could start HP-UX into a different run-level. I don't know which
excludes all X11 things, but I guess it was number 3?!

To do so, boot the root-drive into the ISL. At the ISL> prompt, load
HP-UX to boot into the desired run-level, e.g.:

 ISL> hpux -i3

Booting into single-user would be accordingly

 ISL> hpux -iS

Most workstation of that time start in 'server' mode if (cold-) booted
without mouse and keyboard connected. The console will be at tty0
(9600baud, 8 bits, no parity)

powerdown, plugin keyboard, powerup.

THere might be some info at the pa-linux site: http://parisc-linux.org/,
there the faq, boot or hardware area.

1. Apollo 715/50 won't boot

I have an HP Apollo 715/50 that is still hanging on in its fight
to remain dead.  I also have next to NO experience with HP-UX (9.01) or
the Apollo Workstation.

It does not want to boot, it gets through the ISL phase and is
(I suppose) trying to start hp-ux.  It clears the screen on the console
and tells me things like:

---------------
        Floating Point coprocessor configured

        I/O sub systems configured

        ...

System Console is on the ITE

Networking memory for fragment reassembly is restricted to 2957312 bytes

Swap device table: (start & size in 512-byte blocks)
        entry 0 - auto-configured on root device; start = 1853488; size 196590

Core image of 8192 pages will be saved at block 992271 on device 0x7201600

---------------

Then it blinks the leds on the Scroll Lock -> caps lock -> num luck
keys in back and fourth sequence, faster and faster - then they go out.

Leds 8,7,6,5 on the computer are lit
        Led 4 blinks
        Led 3 is off
        Led 2 blinks
        Led 1 off

And here the machine will sit for as long as I let it.  I was able to
boot it off of the CD-ROM, fsck and mount the harddisk and nothing looked
terribly out of place.

So, it looks like something bad had happened, but it is not at
all clear to me *what* has happened, let alone how to fix it.

Any advice from those who ride HP-UX more often than I do?

        Thanks,
        Bob Martel
