Stale NFS handle on X-station

Stale NFS handle on X-station

Post by Sherwood Botsfo » Sat, 21 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I have an x station that nfs exports it's floppy to the server.

/tmp_mnt.hpxt/canopus/hpxtfd on canopus:/hpxtfd wsize=4096,rsize=4096,timeo=150,soft on Wed Nov 11 19:20:11 1998

if I ls:
ls /tmp_mnt.hpxt/canopus/hpxtfd
ls: /tmp_mnt.hpxt/canopus/hpxtfd: Stale NFS file handle

umount /tmp_mnt.hpxt/canopus/hpxtfd
umount: umount(1M) of /tmp_mnt.hpxt/canopus/hpxtfd: Device busy

lsof  /tmp_mnt.hpxt/
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() nfs file system /tmp_mnt.hpxt/canopus/hpxtfd
      Output information may be incomplete.

ARG!

I've tried power cycling the X-station.

Do I need to reboot the server to get this problem to go away?

There is a patch from HP to 'umount' a Stale File Handle.
This is a known problem at hpux 10.x

I have found that it helps if you keep a floppy diskette in the drive.
Also, though this is nit-picking, access the floppy through something
like "/hpxtfd/name-of-xstation" which is symbolic linked to
/tmp_mnt.hpxtfd/name-of-xstation. Similar to automount /net and /tmp_mnt.
Then automount can do its job properly.
And apply patch for umount of stale nfs, as already related in this thread.
