EMACS/lex/Yacc mode

Hello:
  I am using EMACS 21.1 on HP-UX.
After reading EMACS FAQ, I still can not figure out how to enable lex
mode.  Can someone give me a hand?

thanks

Is there a lex-mode in Emacs 21.1?!?

Assuming you've added such a mode, you probably want to add the
following to your .emacs:

(add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\.l" . lex-mode))

What have you tried?  Why is it not working?

We can't help you if you don't describe your problem.

when a lex file (.l) is loaded, EMACS tries to use CC mode (by selecting
Options/Syntax Highlighting).  However, since there are lex codes and
standard C codes in the same file, EMACS will get confused. The sympton
is that the bottom half of lex file is highlighted. Maybe there are some
parathesis mismatches somewhere.

IIRC, mmm-mode could do this.

No, not reliably.  cc-mode parses the buffer from the very beginning,
so trying to use it with mmm-mode will lead to problems.

1. Is anyone working on a Lex/Yacc mode for Emacs?

Dear XEmacs users,
Does such a mode exist? Will it be in XEmacs 19.14?
Thanks in advance. :-)
