Can't Find The .emacs File In New Xemacs

Post by Jaime Villel » Thu, 10 Apr 2003 07:04:58

I just installed the binary for Win32 (which is really cool by the way) and
I want to configure Xemacs to run Verilog mode.  The problem is I can't find
any .emacs or _emacs file (I've searched the whole directory).  How do I get
this going?

See
XEmacs <= 21.1
Help->Samples->Sample .emacs
XEmacs >= 21.4
Help->Samples->Sample init.el

This bit from my site-start.el may help also, even though it may be a
bit outdated.

See also verilog-mode.el for further information.

Best regards,

Adrian

;;; A major mode for editing Verilog HDL source code. When you have
;;; entered Verilog mode, you may get more info by pressing C-h m. You
;;; may also get online help describing various functions by: C-h f
;;; <Name of function you want described>

;;; To set up automatic verilog mode, put this file in your load path,
;;; and include stuff like this in your .emacs:

(autoload 'verilog-mode "verilog-mode" "Verilog mode" t )
(setq auto-mode-alist (cons  '("\\.vh?\\'" . verilog-mode) auto-mode-alist))
(setq auto-mode-alist (cons  '("\\.dv\\'" . verilog-mode) auto-mode-alist))
(setq auto-mode-alist (cons  '("\\.f\\'" . verilog-mode) auto-mode-alist))
(setq auto-mode-alist (cons  '("\\.vlog\\'" . verilog-mode) auto-mode-alist))
(setq auto-mode-alist (cons  '("\\.verilog\\'" . verilog-mode) auto-mode-alist))

(add-hook 'verilog-mode-hook 'turn-on-font-lock)

C-x C-f ~/.emacs RET

But it may be that this XEmacs decides to use something like
~/.xemacs/init.el
or so instead.

     I think he's asking for *where* the init file is.

     The init file is now called "init.el", and is typically located as:

        ~/.xemacs/init.el

(The ~/.emacs file is obsolete.)  You can also edit init.el via the menu
pick, "Options/Edit Init File".

[ Now, where "~/." is, is typically determined by the value of $HOME,
  or, if $HOME is not set, from %HOMEDRIVE% and %HOMEPATH%.  ]

Ah, I think you're right, Darryl!

Jaime, please check the values of

user-init-file
 and
custom-file

You don't have one until you create it.

Where it is can be confusing, especially on Windows.  Try Options ->
Edit Init File.

1. hidden files in the 'find-file'-dialog

How can make xemacs not to show me
the hidden files and dirs in the find-file-dialogue ?

Is there a permanent solution available instead of
pressing C-h k C-o in dired mode?
