Slow FTP Gets.

Post by Lawrence Newt » Wed, 25 Jun 2003 03:56:24

I have just configured a DS10 with VMS 7.3-1 with patches, but no patch for
TCPIP.  I am using the DE500 built in DE500 ethernet ports. Every thing seems
to work except I can do an ftp get from other systems and the transfer runs
at about a megabyte/second. If I do an ftp get from the DS10 to the same
systems, it runs at less than 10 kilobytes/second. I did a short ftp put from
a PC and it appeared to run at a fast speed.

I probably need to run some more tests, but has anyone had a similar problem??

1.) Install ECOs. They fix problems. And TCPIP has a lot.
2.) Not digging too much into, I almost bet that this a autonegotiation
problem of the ethernet hardware (DE500, Switchport)

at the console
P00>>  set ew*mode FASTFD
or is that an EI device?

and if your switch supports it, force it 100 Full Duplex.

I did have a similar problem a while ago
though it was not a vms/tcpip problem,
it was actually due to misconfiguration of a switch
To track it down I used ttcp.exe to get some
stats between various nodes
(you can also get ttcpw for testing from/to your pc)

Check your default route.  When I converted my network I forgot to change
the default route and while incoming data was coming in off a T1, the ACKs
were going over a 56K modem.

Fixed.  Brute force method.  Installed a 2 port DE602 card.
Transferred 61000 blocks in 6.5 seconds.  TCPIP reported speed of over
4000 KB/SEC.  I susspect the built in DE500's are worse than most of them
so I will ignore them.

Thanks for the responses.
