OpenVMS 7.3 - XFC ECO 2 !!! When ?????

OpenVMS 7.3 - XFC ECO 2 !!! When ?????

Post by Fabio Cardos » Wed, 17 Jul 2002 03:05:09

I would like a postion of the XFC ECO 2  ?

A few threads ago, Hoffmann promised it to
12-JUL-2002.
Until now - nothing !
We tested our ES-40 with the XFC activated and
we had great results of performance with ORDB 7.0-64.
But, despite the problems with the cache, we turned
the system to VIOC !

Regards

FC

OpenVMS 7.3 - XFC ECO 2 !!! When ?????

Post by Mark D. Jilso » Wed, 17 Jul 2002 05:23:27

The XFC patch kit for OpenVMS Alpha V7.3 will be released on or about
the same time that OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-1 is released.  The release
process for these two is different and thus the release may not occur
simultaneously.  See previously posted release plans at
www.openvms.compaq.com.

OpenVMS 7.3 - XFC ECO 2 !!! When ?????

>I would like a postion of the XFC ECO 2  ?

I don't think anything more will be said officially until it is released.
We have seen estimated dates.  In a world where "stuff" happens, I don't
think anyone will waste time trying to predict the exact day, or even
week.

I won't spend time looking for a post where Hoff "promised" anything like
an exact date.  That would be pretty unusual.

Yes, under many workloads, XFC blows the socks off of VIOC.  But you are
correct to turn XFC off until you get the patch.

If you have a software service contract, you can always ask your HP
representative to try to get you early access to the ECO.

OpenVMS 7.3 - XFC ECO 2 !!! When ?????

Now, talkng about Rdb specificaly, I think that you can get
the same, if not better, peformance by using the buffer/caching
tools in Rdb, instead of XFC. Such as global buffers, row cache
and properly configurated process buffers sizes. If you application
does a lot of other thing besides of database I/O, that's a
different story.

In general, I try to buffer data as close to the "user" as possible,
that is with the shortest code-path from the application to the data.
In Rdb that is local buffers, Row cache, Global buffers, any VMS
caching and disk controler caching in that order.

I'm not saying that XFC would be a bad thing when using Rdb, but I don't
think
it can replace a proper use of the built-in buffer/caches in Rdb.

We are quite deliberately holding the release of the XFC V2.0 ECO kit,
pending the (full and correct) completion of the regression test suite,
as well as some associated specific field testing, as well as testing
with the OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-1 release.

The current ESTIMATE for release of this ECO will be contemporary with
the release of OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-1.   Again, this release schedule is
an ESTIMATE.  (And yes, the astute reader will notice that I have quite
deliberately NOT posted a specific release date.)

As has been previously requested, please continue to use the VCC (VOIC)
cache pending the release of XFC V2.0.  Please set the system parameter
VCC_FLAGS to 1 on OpenVMS Alpha V7.3 (only), pending the release of XFC
  V2.0 ECO kit, or later.

Getting an XFC V2.0 ECO kit out that is both functional and stable is a
high priority, as is a similarly functional and stable V7.3-1 release.
