Bridgeboard HACK question -- 2 more 16-bit slots?

Post by Darren MacKenz » Thu, 27 Feb 1997 04:00:00

Heyas...
I was wondering if anyone here has done the hack to turn the two
XT slots into AT slots on the A2000?  I've seen this hack done
before, so you can use 3 AT cards with a bridgeboard.  QUITE useful.

Has anyone done this?  Is it just as simple as soldering in the extra
two pieces to the AT slots?  Any info would be appreciated.

I have done this and yes, it is that simple, assuming you can find the
right size card edge sockets and are relatively handy with a soldering
iron and some sort of "solder sucker" to help remove the small amount of
solder that blocks the holes you need to plug the card edge sockets
into.  Good luck!

Yes, it's that easy. You have to desolder the filled holes, plop a couple
connectors in, and solder them down. Guess C= got cheap on us. :)

Yes, I,ve done it.  The holes for the AT connector are filled with
solder, so you need a solder sucker to clear them first.  If you are
really skilled at it, you might be able to use solder wick, but I
certainly wouldn't try it.  I got the connectors from an old '286
motherboard.  Since the motherboard was trash anyway, I used a propane
torch to heat all the connections from the bottom.  The board ends up
quite burned, but the connector is safe as long as you keep the torch
moving.  Sure beats trying to desolder all those pins individually.
Some motherboards use a single connector, but you can just cut off the
part you don't need -- I wouldn't recommend desoldering the existing
Amiga connector.  Including disassembling and reassembling the computer,
it took me around two hours at a leisurely pace.

Not the reason at all...according to the manuals, they left the
connector off because some (older) boards designed for the XT generation
of computers didn't fit the AT slots.

A good source of the connectors is to find an old, dead PC mother
board.  You can usually get one for a buck or two.

It's not a "hack" really, just fitting sockets Commodore neglected to install.
Yes, it is as simple as soldering them in. I did so with my A2000 a couple of
years ago, with no problems.

Yes it is that easy. I had it done by the local Amiga shop *many* years
ago. Just solder in the appropriate connectors. Nothing else is needed.
