I don't know if it's of any help to you, but as far as hardware is concerned
DAT will do a good job.
Some time ago I've
tried an HP C1533A SCSI DAT drive (4GB noncompressing, 16GB compressing,
510kb/sec) on my A3000.
However, I didn't use it for backup purposes but only for data exchange
with the UNIX boxes I use at work. I wrote a q&d program using the scsi.device that allowed me to fill DAT tapes with data on UNIX and to read them under
AmigaDOS at home. This is a relatively cheap way of mass storage,
a 4GB DAT drive + media is about DM 2000,-, a 4GB disk is > DM 4000,-.
