Amiga 2000 ISA 8-bit to 16-bit

Amiga 2000 ISA 8-bit to 16-bit

Post by r.. » Tue, 23 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Hello.

Where can I get simple directions for how to upgrade the 8-bit ISA slots in my
Amiga 2000 to 16-bit?

Are the slots which have to be soldered on easy to get from local PC stores? My
company has an old 386SX computer - would I be able to just remove them from
that? (I do not care what happens to the 386)

Is this a relatively easy project that I could do myself? I do not have much
experience in hardware hacking, so I would appreciate straightforward
instructions. Is it a simple matter of soldering in the slots to make them
16-bit, or does it require any other modifications on the motherboard. I have a
rev 4.3 Amiga 2000.

Thanks,
Roy

Only the 36pin slots have to be added. Then you have full 16bit AT-Slots.
I would't solder in used ones, better buy the two slots at your local
electronic dealer. They cost only a very few , $$ or whatever...

Installing the extra connectors is quite easy (just a matter of
inserting and soldering each one). You may have to suck out any
existing solder from the holes first. No other modifications are
needed.

Getting the connectors off an old '386 board could be a bit tricky,
because you need to unsolder a lot of through-plated holes. If you
don't want the old motherboard then a heat-gun (for stripping paint
etc.) set to high power, can be used to unsolder all the pins at once.

Clamp the board vertically in a vice, heat the solder side, and pull
out the connectors with pliers. Watch out for solder splashes and fumes.
Wear eye protection!

You may find that your '386 board has combined 8/16 bit connectors. If
so, just cut the 8bit connectors off with a hacksaw.

You are unlikely to get connectors from a peecee store, as they usually
only sell parts for new peecees.

When I had an A2000 I modified it to convert the two 8-bit ISA to
16-bit ISA.

I used two 2.54mm (0.1") 2x18 Edge connectors from a local UK
electronics supplier called "Maplin".  I completly removed the
motherboard and using a solder pump on one side and a fine tip low
wattage iron the otherside cleared all of the soldered up holes.  I
then push fitted the connetors and bent over the corner pins to hold
them in place while I soldered them.  Before soldering them though I
noticed that the new connector could move out of alignment so I used
an old dead 16-bit ISA gfx card in the new slots to align them while I
soldered the four corner socket pins to the motherboard.  I then
soldered all of the other pins before moving onto the next slot.

Before re-installing the Mb make sure that no solder has slashed
anywhere else on the MB which may casuse shorts and using side cutters
trim the legs of the new 16-bit extention sockets.  After
re-installing and re-fixing the MB in place check that all socketted
chips are seated porperly by pushing them into there sockets.  Becasue
of the size of the A2K motherboard it flexes a bit when removed from
the case and this tends to dislodge the socketed chips.

Remember to observe static precautions at all times during the
alteration and take your time.

Good Luck.

I did this only last week.
I removed two 16 bit ISA slot extenders from an old 286 motherboard by
desoldering them. This takes some practice before you attempt this. A
desoldering pump did the trick for me.

You can also get the extenders new from most large electronic component
retailers.

You then have to remove the solder holes in the Amiga motherboard before
you can fit the ISA extenders into the motherboard.

Simply solder them in place, making sure that the extension is  mated flat
to the motherboard.

That's it, no other modifications are neccesary.

Clockmeister.
