Saving in GIF format? sometimes yes, sometimes no...

Post by m.. » Mon, 05 Apr 1999 05:00:00

Please forgive me is this is a totally obvious and previously covered
question... but there's nothing useful in any online or written
documentation (e.g., Hammel's new GIMP book) on how to consistently
save files in GIF format, especially with transparency.

I know that the image must be flattened, and the colors indexed, but
this doesn't always work... especially if I run a filter on the image.
Often flattening the image destroys it (I suppose the transparency is
somehow messing things up).  And even then, it won't allow me to save
in GIF format.

Is there some clearly defined set of steps I can use to save a GIF
file and keep the transparent background?

Thanks a million for any help any one can provide!
-Mike.

It basically works like this:

1. Flatten image.
2. Add Alpha Channel.
3. "Select by color" the color you want to make transparent.
4. Convert to Indexed Color.
5. Save as .gif.

That's it.

...and clear the selected area, of course. Silly me...

I normally start off with a new image with a transparent background, and then
just index and save as gif.  It leave the transparent part tranparent.

Thanks for the advice, folks.  What I find though is that when I
create edit an image with an effect or make a logo with a script-fu
script, that'w when things fall apart.  At that point no amount of
indexing or flattening will enable a GIF save.  (Although, I think
once by exiting gimp and restarting it I was able to save something in
GIF format that I couldn't save earlier... very weird)

Can you give a simple example of what you are trying to do?  Have you ever been
able to save a GIF?

yes - I have.  Usually the problem results when I try to save a logo
created with script-fu.  but not always.  Anyway - I'll try the
suggestions generously supplied, and let you know how it goes.
(I'll be away for two weeks, so it'll be a while.)

Thanks
